Fantasy Zone II - The Tears of Opa-Opa (System 16C)

Released in 1987 by Sega for its high-performance System 16C arcade hardware, Fantasy Zone II - The Tears of Opa-Opa is the beloved sequel to the groundbreaking 1986 cute 'em up shooter Fantasy Zone. Departing from the dark, gritty aesthetic of most 1980s arcade shooters, the title leans into a vibrant, cartoonish visual style with neon pastel backgrounds, whimsical enemy designs, and an upbeat, jazzy soundtrack that became a signature of the franchise. Players take control of Opa-Opa, a sentient, winged spaceship with extendable legs, who returns to his home Fantasy Zone to find 10 peaceful planets overrun by a mysterious dark force. Unlike traditional linear shooters, each level lets players fly freely left and right across a looping stage, taking down waves of quirky enemies ranging from bouncing slimes to flying musical notes to earn gold coins. These coins can be spent at temporary in-level shops to unlock powerful weapon upgrades, speed boosts, protective shields, and special bom

Game Guide

Mastering Fantasy Zone II - The Tears of Opa-Opa (System 16C) is easy to learn but hard to perfect, and these tips will help you clear all 10 stages and defeat the final dark Opa-Opa boss. First, familiarize yourself with the core controls: your primary fire button launches forward projectiles to take down flying enemies, while your secondary button drops bombs to destroy ground-based targets and stationary enemy spawners. Prioritize collecting gold coins dropped by every defeated enemy, as they are your most valuable resource in the game. When the in-level shop spawns after you clear 60% of a stage’s enemy waves, never skip it. For the first three stages, avoid wasting coins on single-use bombs or temporary power-ups: instead, invest first in the Wide Beam weapon, which lets you hit 3 separate targets at once and makes clearing swarms of small enemies trivial, followed by the Engine Level 2 upgrade to boost your movement speed and dodge incoming bullets more easily. Always buy a 1-use shield if you have extra coins, as it will absorb one full hit from enemy fire or boss attacks without costing you a life. For stage bosses, always target their glowing weak points first: the first stage flower boss’s open bud core, the second stage fish boss’s glowing mouth, and the penultimate stage crystal boss’s central gem all take 3x more damage than other parts of their bodies. When fighting the final boss Dark Opa-Opa, equip the Laser weapon if you have it, as it deals consistent high damage, and stay near the top half of the screen to avoid his fast dash attacks that sweep across the lower screen. Do not stay on one side of the looping stage for more than 10 seconds at a time, as enemies will spawn behind you to catch you off guard. If you are low on lives, spend extra time in stage 7 farming coins from respawning small enemies to buy extra life upgrades before moving to the final three high-difficulty stages.
