Exerizer (Japan)

First released in Japanese arcades in 1983 by iconic game publisher Namco, Exerizer (Japan) is a fast-paced vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up that remains one of the most beloved underrated arcade titles of the early 1980s. Developed exclusively for the Japanese arcade market with no wide international release at launch, this rare title quickly gained a cult following among local arcade goers for its tight controls, innovative power-up system, and striking neon visual style. Players take control of a high-tech orbital fighter tasked with repelling a massive alien invasion force targeting Earth’s outer defense networks, across 8 progressively challenging stages filled with swarms of enemy ships, tricky mid-bosses, and massive end-stage warships. Unlike many generic shooters of its era, Exerizer introduced a stackable power-up system that was ahead of its time: defeated mid-tier enemies drop blue energy orbs that can be collected to upgrade your main laser cannon, unlock temporary invincib

Game Guide

If you want to beat all 8 stages of Exerizer (Japan) and set a new personal high score, follow these actionable gameplay tips to avoid common mistakes and maximize your survivability. First, prioritize collecting every blue energy orb you encounter in the first 3 stages: these orbs stack to fully upgrade your main cannon, and a maxed-out cannon lets you one-shot most standard enemy ships for the rest of the game, drastically reducing your risk of being overwhelmed by swarms. Never stay stationary for more than half a second, even when the screen appears clear: enemy ships spawn off-screen at random intervals, and staying in one spot makes you an easy target for stray bullets or surprise spawns from the top of the screen. When facing the stage 4 rotating cruiser mid-boss, only aim for its glowing red central core: shooting its outer armor deals no damage, and wasting time firing at non-critical sections leaves you exposed to its 8-way spread shot attack. For stages 6 and above, save all your homing missile power-ups exclusively for boss fights: standard enemies are easy to clear with a fully upgraded cannon, and a full load of homing missiles can wipe out 70% of a final boss’s health in seconds. Always stick to the lower third of the screen unless you need to move up to collect a rare shield power-up: this gives you the maximum possible reaction time to dodge incoming fire, which grows faster and denser in later stages. If you lose a life, prioritize collecting energy orbs as quickly as possible to re-upgrade your cannon: your default starting weapon is far too weak to handle stage 5+ enemy waves, and you will almost certainly lose another life if you don’t earn at least two upgrades within 30 seconds of respawning. Finally, never chase small point pickups at the cost of survival: extra lives are only awarded every 10,000 points, so losing a life for a 100-point enemy kill is never a fair trade.
