Exciting Hour

Released in 1983 by Technos Japan, Exciting Hour (also widely branded as Mat Mania in North American regional markets) is one of the most pioneering and beloved competitive wrestling arcade games of the 1980s. Developed to ride the global boom in professional wrestling popularity during the era, the game casts players as an up-and-coming indie wrestler competing for the world heavyweight championship across a 5-round single-elimination tournament. Each opponent boasts a unique fighting style, move set, and difficulty curve: from the fast but fragile brawler Coco Savage to the towering, power-focused Great Goliath, culminating in a high-stakes final match against undefeated reigning champion Dynamite Tommy. Unlike many one-note arcade brawlers of its time, Exciting Hour introduced innovative mechanics that would become staples of future wrestling game franchises, including context-sensitive grapples, stun states, and official 3-count pinfall rules enforced by an in-ring referee. Game Guide

Mastering Exciting Hour’s simple but nuanced control scheme is the key to claiming the world championship title. First, familiarize yourself with core inputs: the 8-way joystick controls movement, the left button executes strikes and grapples, and the right button triggers jumps and pin attempts when your opponent is knocked to the mat. Start with basic offense against early opponents: use quick, repeated strikes to wear down your opponent’s stamina, and avoid standing directly in front of power-focused foes like Bull Johnson to dodge their high-damage charging clothesline attacks. When you land 3 to 4 consecutive strikes, your opponent will enter a short stun state marked by wobbling in place: this is your window to execute high-damage grapple moves by moving close to them and pressing the strike button. Grapple moves change based on your position relative to your opponent: stand in front of a stunned foe for a vertical suplex that deals massive damage, or move behind them for a German suplex that drains nearly a third of their health bar in one hit. Timing your pin attempts is critical: never try to pin an opponent before their health bar is at least 80% drained, as they will easily kick out before the 3-count and immediately counterattack. When playing defense, if an opponent grapples you, rapidly wiggle the joystick left and right while mashing the strike button to break free before they land a heavy move. If you get pinned, use the same joystick wiggle + button mash combo to kick out before the referee counts to 3. One underrated trick to take down tough late-game opponents like the Great Goliath is to use jumping kicks: press the jump button and then the strike button mid-air to land a head hit that stuns them 90% of the time, even when they are blocking regular strikes. Avoid getting pushed outside the ring ropes at all costs: the referee will count to 10, and you will lose the match automatically if you do not climb back in before the count ends. You can als
