Dungeons Dragons - shadow over mystara (960206 Japan)

Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (960206 Japan Build) is a landmark arcade action role-playing beat 'em up developed and published by Capcom in 1996, as the official sequel to 1993’s Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom. Built on Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition rules licensed from TSR, this February 6, 1996 Japanese regional build features early balance tweaks not present in the initial global arcade launch, including adjusted spell cooldowns for the Elf and Mage classes, higher loot quality from locked chests, and reduced glitch occurrence during 4-player co-op sessions. Players can choose from 6 distinct playable classes: Fighter, Cleric, Mage, Thief, Dwarf, and Elf, each with unique stat pools, ability kits, and exclusive equipment progression paths. Unlike most linear arcade beat 'em ups of the era, Shadow over Mystara offers branching narrative routes, interactive NPC dialogue choices that alter quest rewards, hidden dungeon areas, and multiple endings based on in-game

Game Guide

Whether you’re a first-time player or a retro arcade veteran, these tips will help you survive the perils of Mystara in the 960206 Japan build. For new solo players, start with the Fighter or Dwarf class first: both have high HP pools, high base defense, and simple ability kits that require no advanced resource management, making them far more forgiving than squishy spellcaster classes like the Mage or Elf. If you’re playing with a group, aim for a balanced party composition: 1 tank (Fighter/Dwarf) to draw aggro, 1 Cleric to heal, apply buffs, and remove curses, 1 Mage/Elf for area-of-effect crowd control, and 1 Thief to unlock locked chests for rare loot and use backstab attacks for 3x critical damage on elite enemies. Save your gold for town shop purchases: prioritize healing potions, Cure Curse scrolls, and high-level spell scrolls (like Chain Lightning or Mass Healing) over low-tier gear upgrades, as most common gear can be looted from enemies and chests for free. When choosing story branches, pick the Forest Path over the Mountain Path if you want to farm extra experience and rare loot: the Forest route has 2 hidden optional boss fights and a secret elven NPC that gives all party members a free +1 magic weapon if you complete his side quest. During combat, use jump attacks to avoid most ground-based sweep attacks from ogres and trolls, and always destroy enemy summoning totems first before focusing on boss enemies, as they will spawn infinite minions if left alive. When fighting the final Shadow Lord boss, eliminate his four floating lich minions first, as they will continuously heal him until they are destroyed. If you get stuck, use Playeretro’s built-in save state feature to record your progress before tough fights, so you don’t have to restart the entire game if your party wipes.
