Driving Force (Galaxian conversion bootleg) [Bootleg]

Driving Force (Galaxian conversion bootleg) is a rare unlicensed ARCADE shooter released in the early 1980s by anonymous bootleg game developers, modified directly from Namco’s iconic 1979 fixed shooter Galaxian, one of the most influential arcade titles of the golden age of arcade games. Unlike the original space-themed Galaxian that put players in control of a starfighter fending off alien fleets, this bootleg reskins all in-game assets to fit a road combat theme: your playable ship is replaced with a high-speed sports car, alien invaders are swapped for hostile enemy vehicles and road obstacles, and the starfield background is reworked into a long, winding highway stretch. While it never received an official commercial release, the bootleg circulated widely in smaller, independent arcades across North America and Europe throughout the 1980s, as it could be installed directly on existing Galaxian arcade hardware without purchasing expensive new cabinet units, making it a popular low-

Game Guide

Mastering Driving Force (Galaxian conversion bootleg) is straightforward once you adapt to its Galaxian-derived core mechanics, even if you are only familiar with the original space shooter. First, familiarize yourself with the basic controls: use the horizontal joystick to move your sports car left and right across the bottom of the screen, and press the single fire button to shoot projectiles upward to take out enemy vehicles. Like Galaxian, enemy vehicles start each level arranged in a tight grid formation at the top of the screen, and will periodically break off from the group to dive toward your car, firing projectiles as they descend. Your top priority during every level should be taking out diving enemy vehicles first: their projectiles move 30% faster than those fired by enemies still in the top formation, and they can often swerve to avoid your shots if you wait too long to target them. Avoid spamming the fire button, as you can only have one projectile on screen at a time; waiting for your previous shot to either hit a target or leave the screen before firing again will drastically improve your accuracy, especially during later levels when enemy density increases sharply. To maximize your score, target the large, leading enemy vehicles that sit in the top two rows of each formation: they award 200 points each, double the points given to smaller enemy vehicles in lower rows, and destroying all leading vehicles in a formation will trigger a 500-point bonus at the end of the level. If you find yourself surrounded by incoming diving enemies, use the full width of the screen to maneuver instead of staying confined to the center: enemies rarely target the far left and right edges of the screen, so you can often duck to an edge to avoid incoming fire before moving back to the center to take out remaining targets. Save your extra lives, which you earn every 10,000 points, for later levels starting at level 5, where enemy dive frequency doubles and projectiles move
