Dragon Breed (Japan, M72 hardware)

Released in 1989 by legendary Japanese developer and publisher Irem, Dragon Breed (Japan, M72 hardware) is a beloved side-scrolling shoot 'em up built for Irem’s iconic M72 arcade platform, the same hardware that powered genre classics like *R-Type* and *Kung-Fu Master*. Set in the high fantasy kingdom of Agamen, the game follows young King Kayus, who mounts the ancient silver dragon Bahamoot to defeat the resurrected dark god Zambaaru, who has cursed the land, turned native wildlife into ferocious monsters, and imprisoned the kingdom’s guardian spirits. Unlike most arcade shooters of its era, Dragon Breed’s core mechanic revolves around Bahamoot, a fully indestructible companion whose long, segmented tail players can maneuver to block incoming enemy projectiles, deal contact damage to foes, and even redirect certain attack types. The Japanese M72 build features exclusive tweaks not found in international releases, including slightly adjusted enemy spawn timings, original Japanese voic

Game Guide

Mastering Dragon Breed (Japan, M72 hardware) starts with leaning into its most unique mechanic: your dragon Bahamoot’s indestructible segmented tail. Unlike your human character Kayus, who dies in one hit if struck by any enemy or projectile, Bahamoot takes no damage, so you should always position his tail between Kayus and incoming bullet patterns to block shots without risking a game over. When moving, remember the tail lags slightly behind Bahamoot’s head, so practice slow, deliberate movements to line up the tail as a mobile shield, especially during dense bullet hell segments. Prioritize power-up collections strategically: there are four core weapon types for Kayus, each suited to different scenarios: spread shot works best for clearing large waves of small enemies, piercing laser is ideal for high-damage single-target attacks against bosses, bouncing orbs are perfect for hitting enemies hiding behind terrain, and homing missiles let you take out off-screen foes without repositioning. Collect three of the same power-up in a row to unlock a one-time screen-clearing super attack that eliminates all enemies and projectiles; save this for emergency situations like being trapped between two enemy waves or unexpected boss attack patterns. For stage-specific tips: in Stage 1’s forest zone, use Bahamoot’s tail to block the spiked seed projectiles spit by the stage boss’s plant form, and aim all fire at the glowing core on its head to beat it quickly. In Stage 2’s submerged ruins, watch for hidden enemies popping out of stone pillars, use homing missiles to take them out without moving into their line of fire. For the final boss Zambaaru, target his right arm first in phase 1 to disable his high-damage laser attack, use Bahamoot’s tail to block the swarms of small homing projectiles he summons, and only attack his exposed chest core in phase 3, as his armor is invulnerable the rest of the time. The Japanese M72 build has faster enemy spawns than international versions,
