DownTown Mokugeki (prototype)

First uncovered by retro game preservation teams in 2014, DownTown Mokugeki (Prototype) is an unreleased 2D beat 'em up arcade title developed and set to be published by Technos Japan in 1992, before being scrapped late in production for unconfirmed internal reasons. A planned spin-off of the beloved *Kunio-kun* (River City) franchise, the game is set in the bustling, crime-ridden streets of a fictional Japanese downtown district, where players take control of either of two street-smart high school fighters tasked with taking down a violent local biker gang that has been terrorizing local shop owners and residents. While the prototype build only features three fully completed stages, partial assets for two additional unfinished levels, and a handful of unpatched animation bugs and collision glitches, its core gameplay loop is fully functional, with a polished combo system, interactive environment props, and cooperative 2-player support that matches the quality of Technos’ commercially

Game Guide

Mastering DownTown Mokugeki (Prototype)’s fast-paced beat 'em up gameplay is easy with these actionable tips, even if you are new to 90s arcade fighting titles. First, familiarize yourself with the core 4-button arcade control scheme: light punch, heavy punch, jump, and guard. Light punches land fast for quick combos, while heavy punches deal high damage and can knock down groups of enemies, and holding guard will block most incoming melee and projectile attacks without draining your health bar. For early-game progression, always prioritize grabbing interactive environment props before engaging large groups of enemies: baseball bats deal 2x the damage of standard punches, bicycles let you ram through entire crowds of mooks without taking damage for 3 hits, and empty trash cans can be thrown at distant enemies to stun them. When surrounded by 3 or more enemies, never stay in one spot: use the forward + heavy punch dash attack to break through the group, or grab a nearby enemy and throw them into the crowd to deal area-of-effect damage and create space. For the three completed stages in the prototype: the first stage’s street boss has a high-damage charge attack that you can dodge by jumping sideways right as he starts running, then hit his back for 3 seconds of unguarded damage. In the second parking garage stage, always take out the bottle-throwing ranged enemies first before fighting melee mooks, as their projectile attacks can stun you and leave you open to hits from behind. In the final prototype stage, the abandoned factory boss wields a metal pipe that he can throw across the room: kick the explosive oil barrels scattered around the stage at him to take out 1/3 of his health per hit, and save the health pickups hidden behind crates for right after he uses his pipe throw attack. Note that as an unfinished prototype, you may encounter occasional frame drops when grabbing enemies: avoid spamming buttons during these moments to prevent getting stuck out of bounds.
