Double Wings (set 2)

Double Wings (set 2) is a revised, widely beloved ROM variant of the iconic 1993 vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up (STG) developed and published by South Korean arcade game studio Dooyong. Unlike the original set 1 version released earlier the same year, set 2 adjusted enemy spawn timings, rebalanced difficulty curves across all 8 stages, and fixed several critical collision detection bugs that plagued the initial launch, making it the most widely deployed version of the game in arcades across East and Southeast Asia throughout the 1990s. Players take control of one of two specialized fighter jets, either the wide-shot Fire Falcon or focused-laser Blaze Eagle, to fend off an alien invasion that has decimated Earth's outer defense lines. The game supports both single-player and 2-player co-op modes, allowing friends to team up to take down waves of enemy fighters, armored assault craft, and massive stage-ending bosses each with unique attack patterns and weak points. Game Guide

Mastering Double Wings (set 2) starts with choosing the right fighter for your skill level: new players should opt for the Fire Falcon first, as its wide, spread-out main fire can clear waves of small enemy craft without requiring precise aiming, even at lower power levels. If you’re a veteran STG player chasing fast boss kills, pick the Blaze Eagle, whose concentrated laser beam deals 3x more single-target damage, though you’ll need tighter movement control to avoid incoming fire while aiming at priority targets. First, learn the power-up system: pink supply ships drop P orbs, and every 3 P orbs upgrade your main weapon to the next tier, with a max level of 5. Dying will reset your weapon to level 1, so prioritize survival over grabbing stray power-ups whenever you’re in a tight spot. Yellow M orbs unlock homing missiles that automatically track enemy craft, green H orbs unlock high-damage explosive rockets that deal splash damage to groups of enemies, and blue B orbs add an extra bomb to your stock, with a max of 3 bombs stored at any time. For stage progression: in Stage 1’s flying battleship boss, stand 45 degrees to the left or right of its central cannon weak point to avoid its spread shot barrages, as there are always large gaps in the pattern on either side. Starting from Stage 2’s jungle biome, watch for enemy craft that spawn from the bottom of the screen, as set 2 adjusted their spawn timing to be 1 second slower than set 1, giving you just enough time to reposition before they fire. From Stage 5 onwards, avoid getting too close to floating space debris: even after you destroy them, they release small shrapnel fragments that can take you out in one hit. When fighting bosses, save your bombs for their second “enraged” phase, where their bullet density doubles and gaps in patterns shrink significantly – this is especially true for the final stage’s alien mothership boss, whose second-form full-screen barrage is almost impossible to dodge without a bomb.
