Double Wings (set 1)

Double Wings (set 1) is a beloved vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game first released in 1993 by South Korean game studio Comad, as the original unmodified launch version of the title that dominated 90s local arcade halls across Asia and parts of North America. Built for the classic arcade cabinet format, the game puts players in control of a state-of-the-art fighter jet tasked with fending off a global alien invasion across 8 distinct, progressively challenging stages. Each stage is set against a unique backdrop, ranging from war-torn coastal cities, arid desert military bases, open ocean fleets, to the final alien mothership core deep in outer space. The game’s signature "Double Wings" mechanic lets players collect special power-ups to unlock a secondary wingman fighter that flies in formation with your primary craft, doubling your firepower and coverage range to take down swarms of enemy craft and large boss units. The original set 1 version retains the unadjusted difficulty

Game Guide

Mastering Double Wings (set 1) requires a balanced mix of enemy pattern memorization, smart power-up management, and sharp reflexes to clear all 8 stages and claim a spot on the high score list. Start by mastering the core controls: use the 8-way joystick to move your fighter across the screen, the primary fire button to shoot down enemy craft, and the secondary button to deploy a full-screen bomb that clears all on-screen bullets and deals massive damage to boss units, with a maximum of 3 bombs you can carry at any time. Prioritize collecting red W power-ups first: collecting 3 of these will unlock your full double wing formation, which triples your fire coverage and makes clearing swarms of small enemy craft far easier. If you take a hit with the double wing formation active, you will only lose your wingman instead of a full life, so prioritize dodging hits once you have the formation unlocked. Next, collect blue P power-ups to boost your bullet damage, up to 3 stackable levels that let your shots pierce through medium-sized enemy craft, and green B power-ups to restock your bombs, with extra bombs converted to 1000 bonus points when your stock is full. For early stages 1 to 3, stick to the lower third of the screen to give yourself maximum reaction time for incoming bullets: the stage 1 helicopter boss only fires straight line missiles, so you can dodge easily by shifting left and right away from the center of the screen, while the stage 2 desert tank boss’s spread shot can be fully avoided by staying in either bottom corner of the screen. For mid-game stages 4 to 6, watch for enemy craft spawning from the bottom and sides of the screen to avoid being hit from behind, and never stay at the very top of the screen where diving enemy craft will hit you before you can react. For the final stage 8 alien mothership boss, focus on taking out its side turrets first in phase 1, find the gaps in its ring laser attack in phase 2, and deploy a bomb if you get overwhelmed by
