Do! Run Run (set 1)

First released in arcades worldwide in 1984 by Japanese game developer Universal, Do! Run Run (set 1) is the fourth entry in the iconic Mr. Do! arcade franchise, and one of the most innovative action arcade titles of the mid-1980s. Unlike the top-down digging gameplay of earlier Mr. Do! titles, Do! Run Run swaps tunneling mechanics for a unique area-capture loop set across brightly colored grid levels. Players take control of the eponymous Mr. Do, a round, hat-wearing clown-like character tasked with capturing sections of each level by drawing continuous boundary lines between existing captured terrain. Once a closed loop is completed, all terrain inside the loop is converted to your territory, and any fruits scattered across that section are automatically collected for points. The set 1 ROM version is the original, unpatched first release of the game, featuring the unadjusted default difficulty, original character sprites, and unedited sound effects that arcade players experienced in

Game Guide

Mastering Do! Run Run (set 1) is all about balancing risk and reward as you work to capture territory and rack up high scores. Start with these core tips to improve your runs: First, familiarize yourself with the basic controls: use the 8-way joystick to move Mr. Do across the grid, and press the single action button to start drawing your boundary line. Your line will remain active as long as you hold the button, and closing a loop between two points of already captured territory will lock in that section. Never leave an unclosed boundary line active for more than a few seconds: if any monster steps on your active line, you will lose a life instantly. For new players, avoid trying to capture large 50%+ sections of the map in one go early on. Instead, capture small 10-15% chunks starting from the edges of the level, which reduces the length of your active line and lowers the risk of being caught off guard by roaming monsters. Keep an eye out for Power Ball pickups scattered across levels: you can hold up to 3 Power Balls at a time, and pressing the action button while not drawing a line will throw a Power Ball, which bounces across the level and defeats any monster it hits. Defeating 3 or more monsters with a single Power Ball gives you a massive combo point bonus, so aim for groups of clustered enemies whenever possible. Prioritize capturing areas with rare, high-value fruits first: pineapples and strawberries give 5x more points than common apples, so targeting these first will help you hit extra life score thresholds much faster. If you are being chased by a group of monsters, you can quickly draw a small, tight loop around yourself to create a new safe zone, which will trap any monsters outside the loop and give you a few seconds to recover. Finally, remember that capturing 100% of the level territory will instantly clear the stage and give you a 10,000 point completion bonus, so always aim to clear as much of the map as you can before running out of lives.
