Donkey Kong Junior (Japan)

Donkey Kong Junior (Japan) is a 1982 classic arcade platformer developed and published by Nintendo, serving as the direct sequel to the groundbreaking 1981 Donkey Kong title. Unlike the original game where Mario (then known as Jumpman) rescued Pauline from the captive Donkey Kong, this entry flips the core narrative: Mario has locked Donkey Kong in a reinforced metal cage as revenge for his earlier kidnapping spree, and players take control of Donkey Kong Jr, the titular ape’s energetic teenage son, on a cross-stage mission to free his father. The Japanese arcade release features subtle, fan-favorite differences from its Western counterparts, including slightly adjusted enemy spawn patterns, a softer difficulty curve for the first two levels, and unique audio and sprite tweaks that were modified for international markets. Across four distinct, progressively challenging levels, Jr must navigate vine-covered jungle canopies, electrified construction zones, and floating platform mazes, av

Game Guide

Mastering Donkey Kong Junior (Japan)’s mechanics is easy to learn but hard to perfect, and following these targeted tips will help you reach the final cage rescue and set new high scores in no time. First, familiarize yourself with core controls: use the 8-way joystick to move Jr left or right on flat platforms, and hold up or down to climb across the hanging vines scattered across every level. The single action button triggers a jump, which you can combine with left or right movement to clear gaps between platforms or leap over oncoming enemies. The biggest mistake new players make is rushing through levels: take 2 to 3 seconds at the start of each screen to observe enemy movement patterns, especially Snapjaws that patrol platform edges and crawl up/down vines, and Sparks that follow fixed paths around electric railings. When climbing vines, remember you can switch between adjacent vines mid-climb by pushing left or right: this is the most effective way to avoid incoming Nitpickers and falling fruit hazards. You can also collect hanging fruit to throw at enemies for bonus points, and hitting 3 or more enemies with a single fruit will unlock a 3,000-point bonus that drastically boosts your high score. The Japanese version’s adjusted difficulty means early levels have slower enemy spawns, so use these first two stages to practice your vine switching and jump timing. For the fourth and final level, focus on unlocking each of the six padlocks one at a time: don’t try to grab multiple keys in one run, as you’ll likely get caught by the fast-moving Sparks patrolling the upper platform. Once you unlock all six locks, Donkey Kong will be freed, and you’ll unlock the next difficulty loop for even higher score opportunities.
