Donkey Kong II - Jumpman Returns (hack, V1.1) [Hack]

Donkey Kong II - Jumpman Returns (Hack V1.1) is a beloved fan-made arcade ROM modification built on Nintendo’s iconic 1981 Donkey Kong arcade title, first released in its polished V1.1 form in 2012 by independent retro game modding community members. Unlike the official Donkey Kong Jr. sequel that shifted focus to Donkey Kong’s son rescuing his father, this hack returns players to the original premise: Jumpman (the original name for Mario before Nintendo formalized his character identity) must climb a series of perilous construction site towers to rescue Pauline from the captive giant gorilla Donkey Kong. This hack retains all the charm of the original 8-bit pixel art and legendary chiptune soundtrack, while adding 12 entirely new custom levels, rebalanced enemy spawn patterns, quality of life fixes for input lag from earlier hack iterations, and new hidden power-ups not present in the 1981 original. It quickly became a fan favorite in the retro arcade community for its perfect blend o

Game Guide

Mastering Donkey Kong II - Jumpman Returns V1.1 relies on a mix of classic Donkey Kong platforming fundamentals and knowledge of the hack’s unique new mechanics. First, familiarize yourself with the core control scheme: use left and right inputs to move Jumpman horizontally, the primary action button to jump, and the secondary action button to activate any collected power-ups. Unlike the original Donkey Kong’s 4 static stages, this hack features 12 unique, progressively challenging levels, so take your first 2-3 playthroughs to learn each stage’s layout, hidden crates, and fixed enemy spawn points. Barrels in this mod no longer only roll straight across platforms: many bounce diagonally down sloped girders, so avoid lingering on platform edges unless you are ready to time a jump immediately. The classic hammer power-up now lasts 30% longer than it does in the original 1981 game, but you still cannot climb ladders while holding it, so only pick it up when you are on a long stretch of platform facing a wave of incoming barrels or fireballs. Keep an eye out for the new shiny star power-up hidden in 3 of the 12 stages, usually tucked behind breakable wooden crates: this power-up gives you 8 seconds of full invincibility, letting you run straight through enemies and hazards without taking damage. For the final 3 stages, watch out for Donkey Kong’s new explosive coconut bomb attack: these bombs have a 2-second fuse before detonating, so you can safely jump over them immediately after they land instead of wasting time running away. Finally, test all ladders in levels 7 through 12 by tapping the climb input once before committing to a full climb: some ladders are fake and will disappear halfway up, leading to an instant fall death if you are not careful. Follow these tips, and you will be rescuing Pauline and unlocking the hidden hard mode in no time.
