Donkey Kong - Arcade Rainbow (hack) [Hack]

Donkey Kong - Arcade Rainbow [Hack] is an unofficial fan-made modification of Nintendo’s iconic 1981 arcade title Donkey Kong, the game that first introduced the world to the character that would later become Mario, then known only as Jumpman. Released by the retro game modding community in the late 2010s, this hack retains all of the original Donkey Kong’s beloved core gameplay, while overhauling the game’s entire visual palette to feature bright, gradient rainbow color schemes across every level. Where the original game used muted industrial tones for its construction site setting, the Rainbow hack swaps grey girders for pink, blue, yellow and orange rainbow planks, recolors fire enemies to shift hues as they move, and even gives Pauline’s iconic dress a rainbow trim. Alongside the visual changes, the mod also makes small, quality-of-life adjustments to the original’s difficulty curve: early levels are slightly more forgiving for new players, while later levels bump up enemy movement

Game Guide

Mastering Donkey Kong - Arcade Rainbow [Hack] follows many of the same core rules as the original Donkey Kong, but there are a few key differences to keep in mind to beat every level and set high scores. First, familiarize yourself with the basic controls: use your joystick to move Jumpman left and right, press the action button to jump over obstacles, and press up or down on the joystick to climb ladders. For the first construction level, note that the rainbow-colored rolling barrels spawn at the same rate as the original, but the mod adds 2 extra random barrel spawns per level cycle, so never stand still on a girder for more than 2 seconds at a time. Wait for barrels to be roughly one full character length away from you before jumping, as jumping too early will often cause you to land directly on the barrel as it moves. When climbing ladders, avoid pausing halfway: the recolored fire enemies in this mod climb ladders 20% faster than in the original, so you will take damage if you stop mid-climb. For the second rivet level, the rainbow-glowing rivets are intentionally easier to spot than the original’s plain metal rivets, so prioritize clearing rivets on the highest platforms first to reduce the number of enemies you have to dodge as you work your way down. Take advantage of the mod’s unique bonus system: collectible rainbow umbrellas are worth 1000 points, double the original’s 500 point value, and you earn an extra life if you jump over 3 consecutive barrels without touching the ground. When you pick up a hammer, note that its duration is 2 seconds shorter than the original, so only use it to clear paths of barrels and fire enemies instead of wasting it on low-value obstacles. For the final level, remember that Donkey Kong throws barrels 10% faster than the original, so plan your route up the girders ahead of time instead of reacting to barrels as they appear.
