Donkey Kong (Japan set 1)

First released in 1981 by Nintendo for arcades, Donkey Kong (Japan Set 1) stands as one of the most foundational and influential arcade titles in video game history. Unlike later regional revisions, this original Japanese first release features a slightly adjusted difficulty curve, unique sprite placement, and the original unaltered storyline that follows Jumpman (the character who would later evolve into Mario) as he attempts to rescue his girlfriend Pauline from the clutches of the giant gorilla Donkey Kong, who has kidnapped her and climbed to the top of an under-construction construction site in downtown New Donk City. Originally developed as a replacement for a failed Popeye arcade project after Nintendo failed to secure the Popeye licensing rights, Donkey Kong was the first major hit for legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto. The Japan Set 1 version is particularly sought after by retro gaming enthusiasts, as it retains Miyamoto’s original unadjusted design: it has a lower barrel s

Game Guide

Mastering Donkey Kong (Japan Set 1) starts with learning the unique timing and spawn patterns exclusive to this original Japanese release. First, familiarize yourself with the core controls: use the joystick to move left or right, climb ladders, and press the action button to jump. On the first construction level, barrels follow a predictable rolling path, so wait until a barrel is roughly one full girder segment away before jumping to avoid misjudging the short jump distance in this version. When you pick up a hammer power-up, remember you cannot climb ladders or jump over gaps while holding it, so only grab it when you are on a flat girder segment with no ladders in your immediate path, and use its 10-second duration to smash as many barrels as possible for bonus points. On the second conveyor belt level, adjust your movement to counteract the direction of the belt: if the belt moves left, hold the right direction slightly as you move to avoid being pushed into wandering fire enemies or off the edge of the platform. On the third elevator level, never attempt to jump between elevators that are more than half a height apart, as the jump range in this release is shorter than international versions, and you will fall and lose a life. Wait for ascending and descending elevators to line up perfectly before leaping, and avoid standing on top of an elevator for too long once it reaches the top of its path, as it will disappear shortly after. On the final rivet level, clear all nearby fire enemies from your path before stepping on a rivet, as the screen shake that triggers after removing two rivets can throw off your movement timing. Prioritize removing rivets from the outermost edges first to limit Donkey Kong’s access to throwing projectiles at you, and you will rescue Pauline in no time.
