Double Dragon II - The Revenge (Japan)

First released for arcades in 1988 by Technōs Japan, Double Dragon II - The Revenge (Japan) is the iconic second entry in the groundbreaking Double Dragon beat 'em up franchise, tailored exclusively for Japanese arcade audiences with unique adjustments not found in international releases. Picking up shortly after the events of the first game, the story follows martial arts brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee, who embark on a brutal revenge quest after their partner Marian is gunned down by members of the resurgent Shadow Warrior gang, led by the monstrous Burnov. Unlike the western arcade release, the Japanese version features balanced enemy health values, slightly reduced friendly fire damage in two-player co-op mode, and a hidden exclusive true ending where Marian is revealed to have survived her injuries, unlockable only by players who complete the full game without using a continue. The game retains the franchise’s signature side-scrolling beat 'em up formula, with three core action butto

Game Guide

Mastering Double Dragon II - The Revenge (Japan) is easy to pick up but hard to perfect, with these pro tips to help you unlock the exclusive true ending and beat every boss without wasting continues. First, learn the core combo mechanics: pressing jump, punch, and kick at the same time triggers your hurricane kick, which has temporary invincibility frames to get you out of tight spots when surrounded by enemies. Hold left or right twice quickly to sprint, then press punch to launch a flying knee strike that deals massive damage to all enemy types, including bosses, and can even knock back projectile attacks. Weapons are your best friend in every level: keep hold of a knife for as long as possible, as it takes only 3 quick stabs to take down most standard grunts, while a baseball bat offers wide area coverage to clear groups of 3 or more enemies at once. Dynamite sticks have a 3-second fuse, so throw them at clustered enemies right as you pick them up to avoid taking explosion damage yourself. For the first stage boss Burnov, wait for him to finish his teleport animation and land before hitting him with 2 consecutive flying knees, then dodge his fire punch attack and repeat to beat him in under 30 seconds. In the second factory level, stay away from the edge of moving conveyor belts to avoid falling off and losing half your health, and kick falling metal barrels back at approaching enemies to clear them for free. The third forest stage has hidden spike traps in the grass, so jump over any raised brown patches on the ground, and use jump kicks to take out archers perched in tree tops before they can fire arrows at you. On the fourth helicopter platform level, compensate for the constant wind pushing you left or right as you move, and prioritize taking down the fast-moving knife enemies first before they can sneak up behind you. For the final Shadow Warrior boss, ignore his duplicate clones – the real boss will always move half a second before his copies, so hit him w
