Mastering Double Dragon (US Set 1) requires a mix of careful positioning, combo knowledge, and smart resource management, especially since this original launch version has higher enemy health than later revised sets. First, learn the core three-hit combo: two quick jabs followed by a heavy kick will take down most standard grunts in one full sequence without giving them time to counter. For groups of enemies, use the jumping side kick to break through crowds and knock multiple opponents down at once, to avoid being surrounded (the biggest cause of game over in this title). When you find weapons, prioritize the baseball bat or combat knife first: both have fast attack speeds and high damage, and can take down even mid-boss Abobo in just a few hits. Avoid the leather whip entirely, as its slow attack speed leaves you open to counterattacks from off-screen enemies. If you’re playing in co-op mode, be extra careful not to hit your partner: friendly fire is fully enabled in this version, and it’s easy to accidentally knock out your teammate mid-fight. For stage-specific tips: on the first alley stage, wait for Abobo to charge before dodging behind him and attacking his back, as he blocks all front-facing attacks. On the second factory stage, watch for flashing spots on the ground that signal falling rock traps, and stand far away to avoid taking damage. Save all food pickups (apples, roasted chicken, sodas) until you’re at 30% health or lower, since there are very few healing items across the four stages, and you’ll need them for the final boss fight against the Shadow Warriors’ leader. Finally, don’t forget that you can throw enemies off ledges on the third and fourth stages for instant kills, as long as you position them near the edge before hitting a heavy attack.
