Dark Tower

First released in 1981 by legendary arcade publisher Midway Manufacturing, Dark Tower stands as one of the most beloved fantasy-themed arcade titles of the early 1980s, a refreshing alternative to the space shooters and maze games that dominated arcade floors at the time. Casting players as a hardened knight on a quest to topple the evil sorcerer ruling the eponymous Dark Tower, the game unfolds across 6 core vertically scrolling floors, each packed with unique enemies, deadly traps, and hidden collectibles. You’ll face hordes of slavering goblins, long-range skeleton archers, fast-moving flying gargoyles, and brute-force troll bosses at the end of every floor, with power-ups like enchanted broadswords, healing potions, and temporary invincibility shields scattered across each level to aid your progress. Praised at launch for its surprisingly detailed pixel art, responsive controls, and dynamic difficulty system that adjusted enemy spawn rates based on your performance, Dark Tower earn

Game Guide

Mastering Dark Tower’s arcade action is all about learning enemy patterns, prioritizing safe movement, and hunting for hidden secrets to maximize your score and survival time. First, familiarize yourself with the core controls: use the 8-way joystick to move your knight left, right, up ladders, and down trapdoors, with the left button for sword attacks and the right button for jumps (hold the jump button longer to reach higher ledges). The most common cause of early deaths is skeleton archers hiding on upper ledges, so always scan the full height of each floor before moving forward, and use your shield power-up (if you have it active) to block incoming arrow fire without taking damage. Flying gargoyles follow a strict diagonal up-and-down movement pattern, so never jump to attack them; instead, wait until they are two horizontal tiles away from you, then swing your sword, which has a longer forward hitbox than it appears to take them down in one hit. For spike traps, watch for the 2-second flash before they activate, and wait for them to reset before stepping on the tile to avoid instant death. When facing the troll bosses at the end of floors 1 through 3, target their unarmored left leg exclusively: three hits to this weak point will take them down instantly, while attacking their armored torso or head does zero damage, and getting within range of their right arm club swing will kill you in one hit. If you want to unlock the secret seventh floor and face the Lich King final boss for a 100,000 point leaderboard bonus, make sure to collect the golden rune hidden on each of the first 6 floors: most are tucked on high ledges you can only reach with a full charged jump, or behind breakable walls you can destroy with three sword strikes. On floors 5 and 6, enemy spawn rates double, so never stand still for more than two seconds, and clear small groups of goblins one at a time instead of rushing into crowded areas to avoid being swarmed.
