Darius II (triple screen) (Japan)

First released exclusively for Japanese arcades in 1989 by Taito, Darius II (Triple Screen, Japan) is a landmark horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up built to push 1980s arcade hardware to its limits. Unlike standard single-screen arcade titles of the era, this special variant uses three horizontally aligned displays to create an immersive 32:9 ultra-wide field of view, giving players unprecedented visibility of incoming enemy attacks from all directions, a core design choice that set the Darius franchise apart from competing shmups. The game’s story picks up shortly after the events of the original Darius, where the hostile alien Belser Army—known for deploying warships modeled after real-world aquatic creatures including giant crabs, anglerfish, sperm whales, and sea turtles—launches a surprise assault on the human colony of Darius. You take control of the advanced Silver Hawk starfighter, tasked with repelling the invasion across 28 branching levels, a far longer and more replayable ca

Game Guide

Mastering Darius II (Triple Screen, Japan) starts with fully leveraging its unique ultra-wide display, rather than treating it like a standard single-screen shooter. Keep your eyes scanning all three sections of the screen constantly, as enemy fighters and projectile attacks often spawn off the left and right edges of the central display long before they enter your immediate firing zone. Prioritize power-up collection in this fixed order to maximize your survival odds: shield upgrades first, followed by main laser upgrades, then homing missile upgrades. Your shield can absorb up to three hits before your Silver Hawk is destroyed, so always grab shield pickups even if you still have remaining shield health to top off your defenses. When navigating the branching level select screen after each boss fight, choose lower routes if you are a new player, as they feature slower enemy spawn rates and simpler boss attack patterns, while upper routes offer rare permanent power-ups and exclusive hidden boss fights for experienced players looking for a challenge. Every boss in the game is modeled after an aquatic creature, and each has a clearly marked glowing weak point, usually located near its head or core: for example, the giant crab boss “Crabbic” has a glowing orange weak spot between its eyes, while the anglerfish boss “Dark Angler” has a glowing bioluminescent lure above its head that you can destroy to disable its high-damage wide laser attack. For 2-player co-op play, which is fully supported in this Japanese version, assign one player to monitor the left third of the screen and the other to monitor the right third, while both focus fire on central targets to clear enemy waves faster. Keep an eye out for the hidden 1UP pickup that spawns in the third level’s upper right corner, exclusive to this triple-screen Japanese variant, which grants you a free extra life. Avoid staying in the very center of the screen for extended periods, as many boss attacks use spread fire pat
