Darius II (dual screen) (Japan old version)

Released in 1989 by Japanese gaming giant Taito as the second entry in its iconic Darius shoot ‘em up franchise, Darius II (dual screen) (Japan old version) is a rare, unmodified arcade variant built exclusively for Taito’s innovative dual-screen arcade cabinet. Unlike the later adjusted international versions and single-screen ports, this original Japanese old build retains the developer’s initial intended difficulty balance, uncut level layouts, and 3 exclusive secret boss encounters that were removed in subsequent re-releases. The dual-screen setup stretches the playfield vertically across two stacked monitors, giving players an unprecedented vertical field of view to navigate waves of biomechanical aquatic enemies, from tiny piranha-style fighters to screen-spanning leviathan bosses designed after real-world sea creatures. Taito’s in-house sound team Zuntata created the game’s legendary synth soundtrack, which is presented in its original uncompressed arcade audio in this build. Un

Game Guide

Mastering Darius II (dual screen) (Japan old version) requires focusing on both screens at all times, as the vertical playfield means enemies can spawn from the top edge of the upper screen and the bottom edge of the lower screen with little warning. First, familiarize yourself with the three core weapon systems: red laser upgrades fire a concentrated horizontal beam that deals high damage to single targets, green homing missiles track enemies across both screens (ideal for clearing ambushes from the screen border), and blue wave cannons fire a wide spread that works best for crowds of small enemies. Never pick up a power-up of a different color than your current active weapon unless you intentionally want to switch, as it will reset your weapon’s upgrade level to 1 immediately. This old Japanese build has a higher base difficulty than international versions, so prioritize collecting shield power-ups first whenever they appear: each shield can absorb two hits, and you lose all weapon upgrades if you take damage without a shield active. When choosing level branches after beating the first two bosses, opt for the underwater “Abyss Path” if you are a newer player: its boss, the giant armored anglerfish King Fossil, has slower, more predictable attack patterns than the sky path’s hawk-themed boss. For boss fights against the dual-screen spanning whale boss “Big Karkinos”, stay in the center of the playfield between the two screens to avoid its full-screen laser sweep, and fire at the glowing weak spot on its underbelly whenever it drops down to the lower half of the screen. If you are playing co-op, split responsibilities with your partner: assign one player to watch the upper screen and handle airborne enemies, while the other focuses on lower screen threats. To unlock the hidden 7th level, collect every red power-up orb in the first three stages without losing a single life, and you will be redirected to the secret boss encounter after beating the third stage boss, wh
