Dai Makai-Mura (Japan Resale Ver.)

Dai Makai-Mura (Japan Resale Ver.) is the 1988 re-released arcade edition of Capcom’s legendary side-scrolling action title, globally recognized as Ghouls ‘n Ghosts. Following the massive success of the original 1988 arcade launch in Japan, Capcom rolled out this resale version to address feedback from arcade operators and casual players, adjusting early-stage enemy spawn rates slightly to create a more accessible onboarding experience while preserving the series’ iconic brutal difficulty for later levels. The game follows knight Arthur, who returns home from a quest to find his kingdom overrun by demonic forces and his princess kidnapped by the dark lord Lucifer. Players guide Arthur across six treacherous levels spanning haunted graveyards, rotting castles, fiery hellscapes, and twisted floating platforms, facing off against hordes of zombies, gargoyles, giant insects, and towering boss enemies. The game’s signature mechanics include its punishing damage system: Arthur loses his stee

Game Guide

Mastering Dai Makai-Mura (Japan Resale Ver.) requires patience, pattern recognition, and smart resource management, even with its slightly adjusted early difficulty. First, never rush through levels: enemy spawns are fixed, so moving 2-3 steps at a time and pausing to scan for incoming threats (like dive-bombing crows, burrowing zombies, or sudden projectile volleys) will prevent you from triggering multiple enemy spawns at once, a common cause of cheap deaths. Prioritize weapon picks carefully: the Holy Sword is the best option for all stages, with long range and high damage, followed by the Cross Boomerang that hits enemies twice and can target off-screen foes. Avoid the Torch weapon at all costs, as its short parabolic range makes it impossible to hit flying enemies or distant threats. When you collect the Golden Armor (unlocked by picking up a third armor drop while wearing full steel armor), save its charged magic ability for high-pressure moments, like when you are surrounded by enemies or facing a boss’s minion wave. For boss fights, learn their movement patterns first: for the first stage’s Minotaur boss, jump over its charging attack and strike its back 2-3 times before retreating, repeating the cycle 5 times to secure a win. For the final Lucifer boss fight, keep the Holy Sword equipped, stand in the left third of the screen to avoid his laser sweeps, and strike during his 2-second attack cooldown window. Don’t miss the hidden 1-up collectible behind the second tombstone in Stage 2, which gives you an extra life to push through later harder stages.
