Cyvern (Japan)

Released in 1998 by Japanese game developer Kaneko, Cyvern (Japan) is a beloved vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up (STG) arcade title that blends high-fantasy dragon aesthetics with classic sci-fi shooter mechanics exclusively for Japanese arcade cabinets. Unlike its international counterparts, the Japanese regional version features adjusted difficulty curves, more generous power-up drop rates, and a hidden extra stage that is only accessible to players who clear the first five levels without using a continue. Players take control of one of three cybernetically enhanced dragon mechs codenamed Cyvern: the fire-focused red Cyvern with concentrated forward fire, the ice-element blue Cyvern with wide spread shot coverage, and the thunder-powered yellow Cyvern with homing projectile capabilities. Set in a distant future where a rogue AI-controlled mechanized army has invaded Earth’s last remaining magical territories, the game tasks players with fighting through six uniquely themed stages, ran

Game Guide

Mastering Cyvern (Japan) starts with choosing the right Cyvern mech for your playstyle. If you are new to vertical shooters, pick the red Fire Cyvern first: its concentrated forward fire deals high single-target damage, making it perfect for taking down bosses quickly, and its straightforward attack pattern removes the need to adjust positioning for spread damage. More experienced players who prefer clearing large groups of minor enemies fast should opt for the blue Ice Cyvern, while the yellow Thunder Cyvern’s homing shots are ideal for players who want to focus on dodging instead of aiming. Your core controls are simple: tap the A button to fire standard shots, hold A for 2 seconds to charge a powerful dragon breath attack that can pierce through multiple enemies and even boss armor, and press B to deploy a screen-clearing bomb that erases all enemy projectiles and deals massive damage to all on-screen foes. Early in the game, prioritize collecting power-up orbs to max out your firepower as fast as possible: you only need 4 orbs to reach full power, and dropping below half health will reset your power level, so avoid taking unnecessary hits. During stage 3, if you clear all enemies in the opening 60 seconds of the level without using a bomb, a secret golden supply ship will spawn, dropping a full power-up, 3 extra bombs, and a 10,000 point score bonus. For boss fights, remember that your mech’s hitbox is far smaller than the visible dragon sprite: it is only located in the small glowing core at the center of your mech’s chest, so you can safely weave through tight gaps between enemy projectiles that look impossible to pass. Do not save your bombs for too long: if you are surrounded by projectiles with no clear escape path, use a bomb immediately, as extra bombs drop frequently throughout all stages. For high-score runs, focus on chaining enemy kills: each consecutive kill within 2 seconds of the last will multiply your score by up to 5x, so plan your flight path t
