Crystal Castles (version 1)

Released in 1983 by Atari Inc., Crystal Castles (version 1) is one of the most iconic isometric ARCADE titles of the 1980s, blending unique 3D-style level design, family-friendly gameplay, and competitive scoring mechanics that made it a staple of arcades worldwide. The game follows protagonist Bentley Bear, a cuddly but adventurous bear who navigates 9 distinct castles split into 37 total isometric levels, each filled with glowing gemstones he must collect to progress. Unlike many arcade titles of its era that featured endless looping levels, Crystal Castles has a defined ending, a rare feature that drew players back repeatedly to complete the full story. Your core obstacles include the evil witch Berthilda, who haunts later castle levels, aggressive walking trees, bouncing crystal balls, swarms of bees, and ghostly spirits that chase Bentley across the sloped, layered platforms of each castle. Version 1 of the arcade release is the original, unmodified iteration, featuring the full o

Game Guide

Mastering Crystal Castles (version 1) starts with learning the core movement mechanics first: use the 4-way joystick to move Bentley across isometric platforms, and the single action button to jump over gaps, avoid incoming enemies, and collect gems that are positioned slightly above ground level. First, prioritize collecting all gem clusters on lower levels first before moving to higher platforms, as enemies spawn more frequently on elevated areas and you will have fewer escape routes if you get trapped high up. When facing Berthilda the witch, wait until she pauses to cast a spell before jumping close and using your magic hat attack (triggered automatically when you are within range and hold the action button) to defeat her, which grants you a 5,000 point bonus and clears all minor enemies on the current level temporarily. Keep an eye out for hidden bonus gems: these appear as faint flickering spots on empty platform tiles, and collecting them gives you 1,000 extra points each, plus reduces the speed of all enemies on the level for 10 seconds. Avoid running straight at moving enemies like the walking trees and crystal balls: instead, move diagonally across the isometric grid to outpace them, as their pathfinding only follows straight lines across the platform axes. If you are being chased by a swarm of bees, jump into a small gap or onto a narrow ledge, as bees cannot navigate tight spaces and will lose track of you after 3 seconds. For high score runs, aim to complete each level in under 30 seconds: you get a time bonus equal to 100 points per second left on the level timer, which adds up to tens of thousands of extra points across the full 37 levels. Finally, save your extra lives for the final 3 castle levels, where Berthilda spawns twice per level and enemy density is 3x higher than earlier stages.
