Crazy Climber 2 (Japan, Harder)

Released in 1986 by Japanese arcade developer Nichibutsu, Crazy Climber 2 (Japan, Harder) is a specialized, region-exclusive difficulty variant of the iconic Crazy Climber 2 arcade title, building on the massive success of the 1980 original Crazy Climber that invented the vertical climbing arcade genre. Unlike the standard global release of Crazy Climber 2, this Japanese harder version ramps up every aspect of challenge to cater to the competitive arcade scene of 1980s Japan, where high-score tournaments drew crowds of dedicated players. The core gameplay tasks you with scaling a series of increasingly complex skyscrapers using a unique dual-joystick control scheme, where the left joystick controls your climber’s left arm and leg, and the right joystick controls the right side of their body. This harder variant introduces far more frequent obstacles: you’ll face faster-falling flower pots from open windows, more aggressive dive-bombing birds, random lightning strikes at higher altitude

Game Guide

Mastering Crazy Climber 2 (Japan, Harder) starts with getting fully comfortable with its one-of-a-kind dual-joystick control scheme first, as misjudging your limb placement is the top cause of early game overs for new players. Start by practicing slow, deliberate movements on the first 5 floors: move one limb at a time, and always ensure at least two limbs are anchored to stable handholds before shifting your weight, to avoid slipping off the building. This harder variant has 40% faster obstacle spawn rates than the standard edition, so always scan 2-3 handholds above your current position to prepare for incoming threats. If you see a person peek out of a window directly above you, move horizontally to a different column of handholds immediately, as they will drop a flower pot within 2 seconds that will knock you off if you stay in place. For bird attacks, which become frequent once you pass the 10th floor, wait until you see them appear on the edge of the screen, then tuck all four limbs against the wall by holding both joysticks down for half a second—birds will fly past without hitting you if you are fully pressed against the facade. When you reach the 20th floor and above, watch for faint blue flashes across the screen that signal an incoming lightning strike: move to a fully covered alcove if possible, or keep all limbs pressed to the wall to avoid taking damage. For extra points, prioritize grabbing glowing gold handholds for 500-point bonuses, and pick up stray kittens hanging from window sills to earn 1,000 points and a temporary invulnerability buff that lasts for 10 seconds. When you reach the final rooftop, dodge the barrels thrown by the rooftop guard by moving left and right between handholds, then pull yourself over the edge to beat the game and post your high score.
