Crazy Balloon (set 1)

Crazy Balloon (Set 1) is the original 1980 maze arcade game developed and published by Taito, the legendary Japanese studio behind global hits like Space Invaders. Released at the very start of the 1980s arcade golden age, this title stood out from the wave of space shooters dominating arcades at the time with its unique, accessible yet challenging mechanics. Players take control of a buoyant balloon tied to a movable anchor, tasked with guiding it through a series of increasingly complex mazes lined with deadly sharp spikes. Even the slightest contact between the balloon and a spike or wall will pop it, costing you one of your three starting lives. This first set variant is the unmodified initial arcade release, featuring a balanced beginner-friendly difficulty curve, fixed level layouts for the first four stages, and the original unedited 8-bit pixel graphics and iconic chiptune sound effects that made the game a staple in arcades across North America and Japan throughout the early 8

Game Guide

Mastering Crazy Balloon (Set 1) starts with understanding its core movement quirk: you control the anchor holding the balloon, not the balloon itself, so the balloon will always lag slightly behind your inputs and swing with inertia if you move too quickly. First, avoid pushing the joystick in full, sharp motions. Small, gradual adjustments will keep your balloon steady and prevent it from swinging into nearby spikes, especially in narrow corridors. Spend your first few playthroughs memorizing the fixed layouts of the first four levels, as these never change in Set 1, and you can clear them without taking any risks once you know the safest paths. When approaching narrow gaps, stop all movement for 1 to 2 seconds first to let the balloon stop swinging completely before inching through the gap at the slowest possible speed. Do not chase time bonus scores on your first runs: while finishing a level faster gives you extra points, rushing is the top cause of deaths for new players, especially once you reach level 5 and above, where moving spike traps start appearing. If your balloon starts swinging uncontrollably, give the joystick a short, light tap in the opposite direction of the swing to stabilize it, rather than holding it down which will make the swing worse. You earn an extra life for every 10,000 points you score, and clearing the first four levels without dying will get you your first extra life right as you hit the harder random-layout stages. If you are playing on PLAYERETRO, use the built-in save state feature to practice hard levels without restarting your entire run every time you lose a life.
