Cosmic Avenger

Released in 1981 by Japanese entertainment publisher Universal, Cosmic Avenger stands as one of the most influential early horizontal-scrolling shoot 'em ups (shmups) to launch on ARCADE platforms, laying critical groundwork for later genre staples like Gradius and R-Type. As a cosmic fighter pilot tasked with eradicating an invading alien force from its home planet, players navigate a sleek combat craft across three distinct, continuously scrolling environments: a rocky alien canyon dotted with ground defenses, a winding underground cave system filled with native hostile creatures, and a towering alien metropolis leading to the enemy’s central command core. What set Cosmic Avenger apart from earlier fixed-screen arcade shooters of its era was its dual attack system: players can fire rapid laser rounds to take down airborne enemy craft, and drop precision explosive bombs to destroy ground targets including anti-air turrets, armored tanks, and hidden power stations. Game Guide

Mastering Cosmic Avenger’s tight controls and enemy patterns is key to setting high scores and completing all three core levels. First, familiarize yourself with the basic control scheme: use the 4-way joystick to move your fighter craft freely across the screen, the primary fire button to launch laser shots at airborne enemies, and the secondary bomb button to drop explosives that only affect ground targets (bombs have a half-second cooldown, so avoid spamming them unnecessarily). During the first canyon level, prioritize eliminating ground turrets that spawn on the left edge of the screen first: their arcing projectile fire covers the entire lower half of the play area, and taking them out immediately opens up safe movement space. Stay in the middle third of the screen as much as possible, as this gives you enough time to react to enemy fighters that spawn from both the top and right edges of the screen. In the second cave level, avoid getting within a quarter-screen distance of the top and bottom cave walls, as hidden spike traps will activate and damage your craft if you get too close. Keep an eye out for glowing orange ground power stations: destroying one will grant you a 10-second rapid fire boost that makes quick work of the cave’s swarming bat-like enemy craft. For the final city level and boss fight against the alien command mothership: stay in the right third of the screen to avoid being boxed in by the mothership’s tri-burst projectile fire. Prioritize shooting down small suicide drones that spawn from the mothership’s launch bays before focusing fire on its glowing central core. It takes 28 direct laser hits to destroy the core and beat the game, after which you’ll unlock a higher difficulty loop for extra score opportunities. Avoid wasting bombs on single ground enemies, save them for dense clusters of turrets and moving armored tanks that appear in later difficulty cycles.
