Contra (US Asia, set 2)

Released in 1987 by legendary Japanese publisher Konami as a regional arcade variant for North American and Southeast Asian markets, Contra (US Asia, Set 2) remains one of the most influential run-and-gun arcade titles of all time. Building on the core gameplay of the original Contra release, this specific set features minor balance adjustments, translated English in-game text optimized for Western and Asian English-speaking players, and the same iconic co-op multiplayer mode that made the franchise a global phenomenon. Set in the distant 2633, the game follows commandos Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, codenamed Mad Dog and Scorpion, as they are deployed to the fictional Galuga Archipelago to stop the evil Red Falcon Organization from unleashing a genocidal alien invasion on Earth. Unlike later home console ports that often adjusted difficulty for casual players, this arcade set retains the sharp, unforgiving difficulty that defined 1980s coin-op experiences: one hit from any enemy projecti

Game Guide

Mastering Contra (US Asia, Set 2) requires a mix of muscle memory, strategic power-up management, and knowledge of enemy spawn patterns, especially since one hit means losing a life and any power-ups you have collected. First, prioritize the Spread Shot (S power-up) above all other weapons for 90% of stages: its wide, multi-directional fire pattern lets you hit enemies above, below, and in front of you without precise aiming, making it perfect for clearing waves of ground troops, flying drones, and even most mid-bosses. Only swap to the Laser (L) or Fireball (F) for specific boss fights where concentrated, high-damage fire is more useful than wide coverage, such as the stage 3 base boss or the stage 6 alien nest boss. Second, always keep moving: standing still even for a second will leave you vulnerable to off-screen enemy projectiles that spawn constantly in later stages. Use the arcade cabinet’s 8-way joystick to jump diagonally whenever possible to dodge incoming fire while still shooting at enemies ahead, and avoid jumping straight up unless you are specifically dodging a low projectile that you cannot run past. For co-op play, coordinate with your partner to split coverage: one player can take high ground and focus on flying enemies and upper-platform troops, while the other stays low to clear ground enemies and incoming projectiles. Never grab a power-up your partner clearly needs if they have no upgrades, as co-op runs are far more likely to succeed if both players are fully equipped. Learn the spawn points of hidden 1UP extra lives: there is a secret 1UP in the first stage hidden behind a tree on the upper left platform 30 seconds into the level, and another in stage 4 behind a breakable wall in the base interior. For boss fights, always prioritize dodging attacks over dealing damage: most bosses have set attack patterns that repeat every 10 to 15 seconds, so learn the pattern first before you start firing heavily. The final alien heart boss, for example, wi
