Contra (Japan bootleg, set 1) [Bootleg]

Released as an unlicensed arcade bootleg variant of Konami’s iconic 1987 run-and-gun classic Contra, the Japan Bootleg Set 1 version circulated in Japanese independent arcade halls throughout the late 1980s, never receiving an official commercial launch. While it retains the core premise of the original Contra title, which follows elite commando duo Bill Rizer and Lance Bean as they infiltrate the remote Galuga Archipelago to dismantle the invading Red Falcon alien organization, this bootleg features small, distinct changes that set it apart from the official Konami release. These include slightly adjusted enemy spawn patterns, a brighter neon sprite palette for player characters and background environments, modified sound effect pitch for weapon pickups and enemy explosions, and the complete removal of Konami’s official licensing branding from the title screen and end credits. Unlike licensed Contra arcade units, this bootleg was distributed without permission to smaller arcade operat

Game Guide

This Japan bootleg variant of Contra has slightly adjusted enemy spawn rates and hitboxes compared to the official 1987 Konami release, so follow these tips to clear all 8 levels successfully. First, prioritize the Spread Shot (S) weapon pickups above all others for standard levels: it can clear swarms of extra flying drones and ground troops that spawn 15% more frequently in this bootleg, and works especially well in the opening jungle and waterfall stages. Save the Laser (L) weapon exclusively for boss fights, as it deals 20% more damage to boss weak points in this variant, but avoid using it for regular levels since it loses its multi-pierce ability here. For co-op play, split your coverage: one player stays low to handle ground turrets and running enemy troops, while the other stays elevated to take out flying enemies and cliffside gunners, so you don’t overlap fire and miss incoming threats. In the over-the-shoulder base levels, destroy all wall turrets before approaching the energy core, or you will trigger extra rolling drone spawns that can quickly drain your lives. Note that the classic Konami 30-life code does not work on this bootleg, so save your continues for the final two alien hive levels, where enemies have 30% higher health than the official release. When fighting the final Red Falcon boss, stay on the far left or right edge of the screen to avoid its wide sweeping laser attack, and only fire at its open mouth weak point when it leans forward to maximize damage output.
