Continental Circus (US set 1)

First released in North American arcades in 1987 by Japanese developer Taito, Continental Circus (US set 1) is the official regional launch version of the hit pseudo-3D Formula 1 racing arcade title. Named for the common European nickname for F1 race circuits (derived from the French word “cirque”), the game stood out among 80s arcade racers for its unprecedented realism for the era, including fully modeled vehicle damage systems, dynamic weather conditions, and realistic F1 car handling. The US set 1 version was specifically tuned for North American arcade audiences, with a slightly adjusted difficulty curve, reorganized race order, and optimized English language UI to fit local player preferences. When it launched, many arcade cabinets featured full force feedback steering wheels, pedal controls, and even mounted seats to fully immerse players in the high-speed F1 racing experience. Players compete across 8 official F1-style tracks, ranging from tight street circuits to high-speed ov

Game Guide

Mastering Continental Circus (US set 1) requires a mix of careful driving and strategic decision-making, rather than just raw speed. First, familiarize yourself with basic controls: prioritize smooth, gradual steering inputs over sharp turns, as sudden jerks of the wheel will send your F1 car sliding off the track even on dry pavement. At the start of every race, wait for the green light to fully illuminate before pressing the accelerator—premature acceleration will trigger a tire spin that costs you 2 to 3 seconds of time right off the line, putting you behind the pack immediately. Pay close attention to the damage meter in the top-left corner of the screen at all times: every collision with a barrier or rival car increases the meter, and once it hits 70% you will see smoke pour from your engine. Pull into the pit lane at the end of the lap as soon as you see smoke, as ignoring the warning will lead to a blown tire or engine failure that ends your run instantly. Slow to 60 mph or lower before entering the pit lane to cut your repair time in half, as speeding into the pits will add 3 extra seconds to your stop. When rain appears on the track, reduce your overall speed by 20% and avoid hard braking or sharp turns entirely, as wet pavement doubles your risk of spinning out. When overtaking rivals, only pass on straight sections of track: attempting to overtake in corners almost always leads to a collision that raises your damage meter. If you are running low on checkpoint time, you can cut small sections of corners by driving over the grass, but limit this to 1 or 2 small cuts per lap, as prolonged driving on grass will slow you down more than it saves. For the final lap of any race, you can ignore minor damage warnings as long as you are confident you can cross the finish line before your car fails, as you do not need to advance to another round after the checkered flag.
