Condor (S C Novar bootleg of Phoenix)

Released in 1980 as an unauthorized bootleg of the hit fixed shooter Phoenix by S.C. Novar, Condor quickly became a beloved underground staple of European golden age arcade floors. Built on the same core gameplay loop that made Phoenix a massive commercial success, Condor makes small but noticeable adjustments to the original title to avoid copyright infringement while ramping up difficulty for seasoned arcade fans. The most obvious change comes in enemy design: the original’s fiery phoenix bird sprites are reworked to feature angular, menacing condor avians, alongside altered sound effects that swap the original’s iconic high-pitched bird cries for deeper, grittier audio cues. Unlike official Phoenix cabinets, Condor also adjusts enemy movement speed, increasing the pace of waves by 15% on average to reduce player run times and boost arcade coin revenue, a tweak that made it a favorite among skilled players looking for a greater challenge than the official release offered. Game Guide

Condor’s faster enemy speed and adjusted spawn patterns make it a more challenging experience than the official Phoenix release, so mastering these core tips will help you survive longer and set higher scores. First, prioritize small, deliberate left and right movements instead of sweeping across the bottom of the screen. The game’s increased projectile speed means you only have 0.7 seconds on average to react to incoming fire, so large, unexpected movements often lead you straight into the path of a bullet you didn’t have time to spot. For the first two waves of small condor enemies, always target the furthest left and furthest right enemies in the formation first. These edge enemies are 3x more likely to initiate a dive attack toward your ship, and clearing them out early eliminates the risk of being attacked from both sides at once, letting you focus all your attention on the remaining cluster of enemies in the center of the screen. When you reach the third and fourth waves of large armored condors, remember that each enemy has two health stages: your first shot will destroy their protective wing armor, and only shots to their exposed chest cavity after that will deal fatal damage. Wasting shots on their armored wings or head will do nothing, so aim carefully to conserve ammo and take them down quickly. For the final mothership stage at the end of each cycle, ignore the small escort ships flying around it until you have taken down the mothership itself. The mothership has a small, exposed weak point in the center of its lower hull, which is only visible when its rotating shield plates line up perfectly. Wait for that small window to fire, and you only need three well-placed shots to destroy it, clearing the stage and earning a 1000-point bonus. Finally, use your temporary shield ability sparingly: it only lasts 2 seconds and has a 12-second cooldown, so only activate it when you are completely surrounded by incoming fire with no clear path to dodge. Wasting it on
