Codename - Blut Engel (2006-01-19) [Homebrew]

Codename - Blut Engel is a critically acclaimed fan-made homebrew arcade shoot 'em up, first released to the retro gaming community on January 19, 2006. Developed by a small team of independent retro game enthusiasts, the title was built to run on classic arcade hardware and modern retro emulators, capturing the fast-paced, challenging energy of 1990s golden age arcade shooters. Set in the dystopian year of 2147, the game follows the player’s mission as the pilot of the experimental Blut Engel (Blood Angel) fighter jet, tasked with repelling an invading force of sentient alien war machines that have occupied Earth’s major cities and orbital defense networks. The game features six hand-crafted levels, ranging from war-torn urban skylines and deep-space asteroid fields to the alien mothership’s core, each capped with a multi-phase boss fight that tests players’ reflexes and pattern recognition. It includes three customizable primary weapon types, a chargeable piercing laser attack, deplo

Game Guide

Mastering Codename - Blut Engel starts with getting comfortable with its core control scheme first: use the directional pad or joystick to move your fighter across the screen, tap the primary fire button to discharge your selected weapon, hold the primary fire button for 2 seconds to launch a high-damage piercing charge laser, and press the secondary button to deploy a screen-clearing bomb that wipes out all on-screen enemies and projectiles (you can hold a maximum of 3 bombs at any time). For new players, start on the Easy difficulty to learn enemy spawn patterns and boss attack sequences before moving to higher difficulties. Prioritize taking out red-marked enemy craft first, as they always drop power-up or healing items: for the first three levels, select the spread laser power-up whenever possible, as it is far more effective at clearing swarms of small, fast-moving enemy drones than the narrow focused plasma shot. When navigating the level 3 asteroid field, note that small gray asteroids can be destroyed with regular fire, but large brown asteroids are indestructible and must be dodged. For boss fights, always track their core weak point (marked with a pulsing red light) to deal maximum damage: for the level 1 heavy assault craft boss, move slowly left and right along the bottom of the screen during its first-phase tracking missile barrages to avoid hits, and stand directly in the center of the screen during its second-phase spread bullet attack to slip through the gap in the bullet pattern. To unlock the secret Schwarzer Adler fighter, collect all 9 hidden data chips scattered across the 6 levels: 3 chips appear per playthrough, one per first three levels, hidden in unmarked transport ships, golden asteroids, and secret cloud alcoves respectively. For high scores, maintain your kill combo counter by avoiding gaps in enemy takedowns, as the multiplier can rise up to 8x for non-stop kills, drastically boosting your final score.
