Chelnov - Atomic Runner (Japan)

Developed and published by legendary Japanese studio Data East in 1988, Chelnov - Atomic Runner (Japan) is an iconic side-scrolling run-and-gun arcade title that remains a fan favorite among retro gaming enthusiasts. The game follows the story of Chelnov, a worker who survives a catastrophic nuclear lab explosion and is rebuilt as a cyborg super-soldier, forced to fight his way through hordes of mutated creatures, rogue military robots, and a tyrannical evil organization that aims to take over the post-apocalyptic world. Unlike many run-and-gun titles of its era, Chelnov features forced horizontal scrolling, meaning players cannot backtrack to collect missed items or avoid oncoming threats, adding an extra layer of tension to every level. The original Japanese release features nuanced lore loosely inspired by nuclear disaster themes, and a slightly adjusted difficulty curve tailored for Japanese arcade audiences, with smoother enemy spawn patterns and more balanced weapon drop rates co

Game Guide

Mastering Chelnov - Atomic Runner (Japan) requires a mix of quick reflexes, smart resource management, and boss pattern memorization to clear all 7 stages without burning through your limited continues. First, keep in mind the game’s forced scrolling mechanic: never linger on the left third of the screen, as new enemy spawns will frequently appear from both the left and right edges, and being caught too far left leaves you with no room to dodge incoming attacks or obstacles. Stay positioned in the middle-right section of the screen at all times to maximize your reaction window. For weapons, your default infinite pistol is only viable for the first few minutes of the first stage: prioritize collecting weapon drop capsules as soon as they appear. The Spread Gun is the best all-around weapon for regular stages, with a wide firing arc that clears out swarms of flying and ground-based enemies in one hit, while the Flame Thrower deals massive area damage to armored opponents and clustered enemy groups. Save the high-damage Laser weapon exclusively for boss fights, as its narrow, high-powered beam cuts through boss health bars in seconds. Always pick up the blue Shield power-up when it appears: it absorbs up to 3 incoming hits, which is critical for surviving the dense bullet barrages in later stages and boss fights. For movement, master the difference between short and long jumps: a quick tap of the jump button executes a low short jump perfect for dodging low-flying enemies and ground spikes, while a full press gives you height to cross wide gaps and hit airborne targets. You can also adjust your horizontal position mid-jump, so don’t panic if you overshoot a platform—you can correct your trajectory while in the air. For boss fights, every boss has a predictable attack loop: for example, the first stage’s giant mechanical centipede will fire three spread shots before charging across the screen, so jump to dodge the bullets and crouch to avoid the charge while firing at i
