Mastering Check Man requires a mix of careful strategic planning and quick reflexes, and these tips will help you clear more levels and set higher scores on every run. First, always plan your route 3 to 5 steps ahead before you start moving across the grid. Randomly wandering will quickly lead you to be cornered by enemies, or force you to cross half the map to reach a bomb before it explodes. Start each level by clearing tiles along the outer edge of the grid first, then work your way inward, as this leaves you with fewer narrow dead ends to get trapped in later. Second, learn enemy movement patterns: all patrolling enemies follow fixed, predictable paths when they are not actively tracking your position, and they cannot make quick 180-degree turns. You can easily shake off a chasing enemy by ducking around a 2-tile corner, as the enemy will take 2 to 3 extra steps to turn around and follow, giving you time to reach a bomb or clear a cluster of unlit tiles. Third, prioritize bomb defusal over all other tasks except avoiding direct enemy contact. A bomb will always spawn on an unlit tile, and defusing it counts as clearing that tile, giving you both progression and a 200-point bonus. Even if the bomb is on the opposite side of the map, adjust your route to reach it before the timer hits zero, as losing a life will set you back far more than a few seconds of travel time. Fourth, leave 1 to 2 unlit tiles near safe, open corners of the map for late-level use. When you only have a handful of tiles left to clear, enemies will speed up significantly, and having a safe tile you can reach quickly to reset your route will help you avoid getting trapped. Finally, prioritize combo multipliers for higher scores: clearing 10 or more unlit tiles in a row without backtracking gives you a 2x score multiplier, which stacks for longer streaks. Avoid unnecessary backtracking whenever possible to keep your combo active, and you will quickly climb the leaderboards.
