Burger Time (Data East set 1)

First released in arcades by Data East in 1982, Burger Time (Data East set 1) is the unmodified original ROM version of one of the most beloved action-platform arcade titles of the 1980s golden age of arcade gaming. You step into the oversized shoes of Peter Pepper, a plucky chef tasked with assembling giant, multi-layered burgers across vertically structured levels filled with ladders, platforms, and mischievous food-themed enemies. To complete each level, you must walk across every segment of burger ingredients including top buns, beef patties, lettuce slices, tomato slices, and bottom buns. Each time you step on a full segment, it drops one level down, eventually landing on a serving plate at the bottom of the screen. Standing in your way are three persistent foes: Mr. Hot Dog, the fast-moving sausage that chases you across platforms; Mr. Egg, a slow but relentless foe that tracks your movement patterns; and Mr. Fry, a bundle of French fries that moves randomly to catch you off guar

Game Guide

Mastering Burger Time (Data East set 1) is all about smart movement, resource management, and knowing when to play aggressively for points or play defensively to clear levels. First, learn the core ingredient drop mechanic: when you step on an ingredient segment, it drops one level by default, but each enemy standing on that same segment when you step on it adds an extra drop level. This means luring 2 or 3 enemies onto a single patty or lettuce slice before stepping on it can drop the ingredient 3 or 4 levels at once, cutting your level completion time in half and earning you massive bonus points. Next, manage your pepper supply carefully: you only start each level with 5 pepper shots, and extra pepper refills are rare, only appearing as random pickups on higher levels. Only use pepper when you are completely surrounded by enemies with no escape route, or when you want to stun an enemy to knock it off an ingredient segment for extra points. A stunned enemy that falls down with an ingredient will net you 500 bonus points per enemy, which is far more valuable than the 100 points you get for stepping on a plain ingredient segment. For movement, always prioritize staying near ladders so you can quickly switch levels to avoid chasing enemies. Mr. Hot Dog is the fastest foe, so always keep an eye on his position and avoid being trapped on a long platform with him approaching from both ends. For later levels with moving ladders and increased enemy spawns, focus on dropping the top bun first before working on lower ingredients: this reduces the total vertical distance you need to climb to reach all segments, and limits the number of places enemies can spawn above you to surprise you. Finally, avoid standing on the edge of a dropping ingredient segment: if you are standing too far out when the segment falls, you will lose a life instantly, even if you were only trying to step onto it for a split second. This set 1 version has slightly slower enemy spawn rates than later rev
