Burger Time (Midway)

First released in North American arcades in 1982 by publisher Midway, Burger Time is one of the most iconic and beloved arcade titles of the golden age of arcade gaming. Developed originally by Data East, the Midway-distributed version quickly became a staple of arcade halls across the U.S. and beyond, thanks to its whimsical, food-themed premise and accessible yet challenging gameplay. Players take on the role of Peter Pepper, a plucky chef tasked with assembling giant hamburgers across a series of multi-level, ladder-connected platforms. The core gameplay loop is delightfully simple: walk across each hamburger component (buns, patties, lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes) to make them drop a level to the platform below, until all components stack up perfectly on the serving plates at the bottom of the screen. Standing in your way are a cast of pesky food enemies: sentient hot dogs, pickles, and fried eggs that chase Peter across every level. If any enemy touches you, you lose a life, but y

Game Guide

Mastering Burger Time (Midway) requires a mix of careful route planning, resource management, and quick reflexes, and these tips will help you beat more levels and set high scores. First, always prioritize clearing the topmost burger components first. Working from the top down prevents you from having to re-climb ladders past groups of enemies later in the level, and reduces the risk of getting trapped between enemies on lower platforms. Don’t waste your limited pepper spray supply on single enemies you can easily outrun or avoid. Save pepper exclusively for situations where you are completely surrounded by enemies with no clear escape route, or when you need to stun an enemy that is blocking the path to a critical burger component. One of the highest-scoring tricks in the game is luring enemies onto the same burger component as you before you step on it to make it drop. If any enemies are on the component when it falls, they will be eliminated instantly, and you will earn a large point bonus for each enemy you take out this way. Keep an eye out for bonus pickups that appear randomly across levels, including fries, coffee, and ice cream. These pickups give you big point bonuses, and some will even grant you an extra life if you collect enough of them. In later levels, avoid the temptation to chase extra points at the cost of completing the level. As enemy counts rise and their movement becomes more unpredictable, focus on stacking all burger components as efficiently as possible first, and only go for bonuses when the path is completely clear. Finally, learn the movement patterns of each enemy type: hot dogs are the fastest and most aggressive, while pickles and eggs tend to take more meandering paths, so you can plan your routes to avoid hot dogs first whenever possible.
