Burger Time (DECO Cassette) (US)

First released in North American arcades in 1982 by Data East, Burger Time (DECO Cassette) (US) is a beloved classic arcade action title built for Data East’s innovative DECO Cassette system, a modular platform that allowed arcade operators to swap game content without replacing entire cabinet hardware, drastically reducing operational costs for venues across the US. The game puts players in the oversized shoes of Peter Pepper, a plucky chef tasked with assembling giant hamburgers across multi-level, maze-like platforms. To complete each level, players must walk across every segment of burger buns, patties, lettuce, tomato, and cheese slices, forcing each component to drop down to the level below until a full, stacked burger is formed at the bottom of the stage. Standing in Peter’s way are three persistent food-themed antagonists: Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg, who patrol the platforms and ladders to catch the chef. Players can use limited pepper shaker sprays to temporarily stu

Game Guide

Mastering Burger Time (DECO Cassette) (US) is all about smart route planning and strategic resource management, rather than fast reflexes alone. First, familiarize yourself with the core controls: use the 4-way joystick to move Peter across platforms and up/down ladders, and the single action button to spray pepper to stun enemies for a short window. Your most valuable resource is your pepper supply, so never waste it on trivial situations. Reserve pepper sprays exclusively for moments when you are cornered by multiple enemies with no clear escape route, or when you need to freeze a foe to finish walking across a burger component before they reach you. You can collect extra pepper refills, along with bonus score items like milkshakes and french fries, that spawn randomly on platforms throughout each level, so prioritize picking these up when the path is clear. One of the most powerful tricks to speed up level completion and earn extra points is to intentionally trick enemies into standing on a burger layer directly below the one you are walking on. When you force your current layer to drop, it will carry any enemies standing on the layer below down with it, eliminating the foe entirely and making the burger component drop an extra full level, cutting your assembly work in half. For early levels, focus on completing one burger at a time rather than jumping between multiple stacks, as this reduces the number of areas enemies can approach you from. As you advance to later levels with moving ladders and more aggressive enemy spawning, take 10 seconds at the start of each stage to map out ladder movement patterns and identify the safest order to tackle each burger component. Avoid chasing small bonus items if it means putting yourself in a position where enemies can cut off your escape; extra lives are far more valuable than a few thousand extra points, especially as difficulty ramps up significantly after the first three stages.
