Bubble Bobble (Japan, Ver 0.0)

First released in Japanese arcades in 1986 by legendary developer and publisher Taito, Bubble Bobble (Japan, Ver 0.0) is the earliest, unmodified retail build of one of the most iconic arcade platformers of all time. Unlike later adjusted international versions and updated Japanese re-releases, this Ver 0.0 build retains the original enemy movement patterns, unadjusted item drop rates, and minor debug leftovers that were cut from subsequent iterations to balance difficulty for wider audiences. The game follows two small, bubble-blowing dragons named Bub and Bob, who venture through 100 single-screen levels to rescue their kidnapped friends from the evil monster hordes that have taken over their home. Each level tasks players with trapping every on-screen enemy inside bubbles before popping the bubbles to defeat them, with points awarded for chain kills, rare item pickups, and fast level clears. Unique to this Ver 0.0 build, players will find that special extend item drops appear 30% mo

Game Guide

Mastering Bubble Bobble (Japan, Ver 0.0) is easy to start but hard to perfect, and these tips will help you clear all 100 levels and unlock the secret ending. First, familiarize yourself with the core controls: use the 8-way joystick to move left, right, or climb up platforms, the first action button to blow bubbles that trap enemies and can be jumped on to reach higher platforms, and the second action button to jump. Always remember that enemies trapped in bubbles will escape after 8 seconds, and escaped enemies turn red, move 50% faster, and can phase through bubbles temporarily, so pop trapped enemies as quickly as possible to avoid unnecessary difficulty. Prioritize picking up rare items first: red sneakers permanently boost your movement speed for the rest of your run, blue special bubbles travel twice as far as regular bubbles to catch enemies across the screen, and lightning bubbles clear entire rows of enemies in one hit. For this specific Ver 0.0 build, take advantage of the higher drop rate for E-X-T-E-N-D letter items: collect all six letters in order to earn a free extra life, which drops far more often in the first 20 levels of this build than in later versions. For boss fights on levels 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100, avoid blowing bubbles directly at the boss, as they will bounce off harmlessly. Instead, trap smaller minion enemies first, then jump on their trapped bubbles to launch them at the boss to deal damage. If you are playing in 2-player co-op mode, split responsibilities: have one player draw enemy aggro and lead them into tight groups, while the other blows large clusters of bubbles to trap the entire group at once for massive chain kill point bonuses. To unlock the true final ending, make sure you play all 100 levels in 2-player mode, as the single-player ending only shows half of the game’s full story.
