Bomber (bootleg of Scramble) [Bootleg]

Released as an unlicensed arcade bootleg in 1981, shortly after Konami’s official launch of the groundbreaking side-scrolling shooter Scramble, Bomber [Bootleg] quickly became a staple in unregulated arcade cabinets across North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. Developed by unlicensed game distributors to cut down on costly official licensing fees for arcade operators, this bootleg retains nearly all core gameplay of the original Scramble, with minor adjustments to appeal to casual quarter-dropping players. You take control of a single-seat fighter jet, navigating six linearly progressing, side-scrolling levels filled with aerial enemy squadrons, ground-based turrets, surface-to-air missile sites, and uneven terrain ranging from snow-capped mountain ranges to narrow desert canyons and fortified enemy cities. A unique fuel management system sets it apart from many other 80s arcade shooters: you must regularly bomb glowing red fuel tanks scattered across each level to refill your con

Game Guide

Mastering Bomber (bootleg of Scramble) relies on balancing three core priorities: fuel management, obstacle avoidance, and efficient enemy takedowns. First, familiarize yourself with the basic controls: a 4-way joystick adjusts your jet’s vertical position and horizontal speed, while two separate buttons handle forward-facing gunfire for aerial targets and downward bombs for ground targets. Your fuel gauge depletes at a steady rate throughout every level, so never skip bombing a visible fuel tank unless you are seconds away from a crash; each destroyed fuel tank refills 20% of your total fuel capacity, and running out of fuel is the most common cause of early game overs. For Level 1 (Mountain Range), stay at mid-altitude to avoid sudden hidden rock formations at the top and bottom of the screen, and take down enemy fighter squadrons (which spawn in groups of 3) as soon as they appear on the right edge of the screen to avoid being boxed in. For Level 2 (Desert Base), ground turrets fire in consistent 2-second bursts: wait for their volley to end before dropping bombs to take them out, and only bomb non-turret ground targets if they block your path to a fuel tank. Level 3 (Canyon Pass) has narrow, winding gaps between rock walls: avoid sudden vertical movements, and take out enemy attack helicopters the second they appear, as their erratic flight patterns make them hard to dodge if they get close. Level 4 (Urban Battlefield) has tall skyscraper obstacles and tracking surface-to-air missiles: dodge missiles by making a sharp vertical movement when they are within half a screen of your jet, and prioritize taking out missile sites before other ground targets. Level 5 (Fortress Approach) has armored ground targets that require two bombs to destroy, so save your bombs for fuel tanks and missile sites unless the armored target blocks your path. The final Level 6 (Command Headquarters) has a single large command tower you need to destroy to clear the run; once you destroy it
