Blue Print (Jaleco)

Released in 1982 by Japanese game developer and publisher Jaleco, Blue Print is a beloved quirky arcade action game that stands out as one of the most creative arcade titles of the early 1980s. The game follows the misadventures of protagonist J.J., whose girlfriend Daisy has been kidnapped by the evil mad scientist Dr. Grump, who plans to use her in his bizarre experiments. To save Daisy, J.J. must navigate a sprawling suburban neighborhood split into dozens of small, explorable house screens, collecting 10 scattered pieces of a secret blueprint that outlines how to build a special machine capable of defeating Dr. Grump. Each house presents unique hazards, from prowling guard dogs and runaway lawnmowers to falling flower pots and flying frisbees thrown by annoyed neighbors, that force players to think quickly and adapt their movement on the fly. Unlike many linear arcade games of its era, Blue Print lets players choose the order they explore houses, adding a layer of player choice tha

Game Guide

Mastering Blue Print (Jaleco) is all about smart prioritization, pattern memorization, and precise timing, and these tips will help you rescue Daisy and beat Dr. Grump even on the hardest difficulty levels. First, when you start a new level, take 5 seconds to scan the neighborhood map to note which houses hold blueprint pieces, and prioritize visiting houses with fewer visible enemies first to collect easy pieces early before the in-game timer starts running low. When entering a house, listen closely for the subtle audio cue that plays if a hazard is present: a low bark means a guard dog is patrolling inside, while a high whirring sound signals a runaway lawnmower. Guard dogs follow fixed, repeating patrol loops, so wait near the door for 2-3 cycles to memorize their path before moving through the house, and you can slip past them without wasting time jumping. For lawnmowers, you can intentionally trigger their movement by stepping into their line of sight, then quickly dart to the opposite side of the house to grab the blueprint piece while they speed away from you. Always collect any clock bonus items you find first, as each adds 10 extra seconds to your level timer, which is critical for later levels where enemies move 2x faster and blueprint pieces are hidden in harder-to-reach spots. Once you collect all 10 blueprint pieces, don’t immediately head to the final build screen: take 10 seconds to grab any remaining extra life bonuses scattered across the neighborhood, as the build screen has a strict 30-second time limit and you will lose a life if you fail to complete the machine in time. When building the machine, watch the moving cursor closely, and press the action button only when it is perfectly centered over the empty component slot; missing 3 times in a row will force you to restart the build sequence, wasting precious time. Finally, memorize the house layouts: they repeat every 4 levels, so you can use earlier, easier levels to learn where blueprint pieces
