Battle of Atlantis (set 1)

Released in 1987 by Japanese game developer Alpha Denshi as an exclusive arcade cabinet title, Battle of Atlantis (set 1) is a fast-paced top-down underwater shooter that taps into the enduring pop culture fascination with the lost mythical city of Atlantis. Set during the catastrophic final hours of Atlantis as the ancient advanced civilization collapses into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, the game casts players as the pilot of a state-of-the-art experimental submarine tasked with retrieving priceless ancient artifacts before the city is buried forever under miles of ocean sediment, while fending off aggressive mutated sea life, rogue Atlantian defense drones, and rival treasure-hunting factions that have flooded the submerged ruins to steal the city’s lost technology. Unlike many arcade shooters of the era that stuck to rigid horizontal or vertical scrolling paths, Battle of Atlantis (set 1) features semi-free movement across scrolling underwater maps, with dynamic difficulty scal

Game Guide

Mastering Battle of Atlantis (set 1) requires a mix of strategic movement, resource management, and knowledge of hidden level secrets to reach the final Atlantian throne room and retrieve the city’s legendary power core. First, familiarize yourself with the core control scheme: the 8-way joystick controls your submarine’s movement across the 2D scrolling map, the first fire button launches standard armor-piercing torpedoes, and the second button activates your equipped special weapon. Always prioritize collecting yellow power-up orbs dropped by defeated mid-tier enemies first, as every three orbs unlocks a permanent weapon upgrade that persists through level transitions, up to a maximum of 5 upgrade tiers. Avoid wasting special weapons on common small enemies like mutated anglerfish or basic patrol drones, as these can be taken out with a single standard torpedo; save homing torpedoes for large boss encounters, and use depth charges only when you are surrounded by swarms of fast-moving enemy drones that are hard to target with standard fire. Each level has three hidden artifact fragments scattered in hard-to-reach crevices on the map, usually hidden behind breakable rock formations that require three torpedo hits to destroy. Collecting all three fragments in a level unlocks a bonus health boost and a temporary invincibility power-up that spawns right before the level boss, which can save you from losing a life during tough boss fights. For the first three levels, stick to the upper half of the map whenever possible, as most enemy spawns appear from the lower and left edges of the screen, giving you more time to react to incoming attacks. For the final boss, the Atlantian Core Guardian, aim for the glowing blue power core on its underside, which is its only weak point; avoid its sweeping laser attack by moving in tight circular patterns around the boss, and use your stored homing torpedoes whenever the core is exposed to deal maximum damage quickly.
