To counteract this, avoid collecting excess power-ups once your shot is at max level, and intentionally let smaller, non-threatening enemy waves pass by without shooting them down if you notice rank spiking (you can tell rank is too high when enemies start firing far denser bullet spreads than usual, or spawn with extra armor that takes multiple hits to destroy). For ship selection, the Silver Sword is the best option for new players: its wide, even spread shot pattern makes it easy to clear groups of small enemies, and its bomb creates a large full-screen explosion that cancels all incoming bullets, giving you a safe window to escape tight situations. Avoid the secret unlockable characters first, as they have far weaker base shot power and more niche bomb effects that are only useful for advanced high-score runs. Conserve your bombs for emergency situations only: never use a bomb to clear a group of weak enemies, save them for when you are trapped in a bullet pattern you cannot dodge, or for high-damage boss phases that have unavoidable spread fire. When fighting bosses, focus on attacking their glowing weak points instead of shooting randomly: each boss has a specific marked weak point that takes 3x more damage, so targeting it will cut fight time in half, which prevents rank from spiking during extended battles.
