Back Street Soccer

Back Street Soccer is a high-energy, accessible arcade sports game first released for coin-operated arcade cabinets in 1997 by Japanese publisher Jaleco, a studio well-known for its fun, casual arcade titles throughout the 1990s. Unlike traditional formal soccer simulations that prioritize official league licensing, strict rule sets, and realistic 11v11 match structure, Back Street Soccer leans into the unfiltered, chaotic fun of pickup street soccer. Matches take place on small, enclosed urban courts across 8 different neighborhood settings, from graffiti-covered downtown alleys to waterfront parking lots, with teams of 3 to 5 quirky, personality-filled amateur players per side. The game ditches rigid rules like offside calls and excessive foul penalties, letting players tackle aggressively, pull off trick moves, and use environment elements like court walls to bounce passes and outplay opponents. With bold, vibrant 90s sprite art, an upbeat street-inspired hip-hop soundtrack, and sup

Game Guide

Mastering Back Street Soccer’s fast-paced gameplay is easy once you learn these core tips, starting with its basic control scheme: standard arcade cabinets use an 8-way joystick for movement, plus three action buttons for passing, shooting, and dashing/tackling. First, prioritize learning the dash tackle mechanic: tap the dash button right as you approach an opposing player with the ball to execute a clean, foul-free steal 90% of the time, but avoid holding the dash button for more than half a second before contact, as this will trigger a rough foul that gives the opposing team a free kick, or even a penalty if you foul inside your own penalty area. When selecting a team, pick based on your playstyle: the Downtown Riders have the highest top speed, perfect for players who prefer fast counterattacks and outrunning defenders, the Port Workers have the highest strength stat, ideal for winning loose balls and playing physically, and the Suburb Academy squad has the best shooting accuracy, great for players who like to build up slow, methodical attacks and take long-range shots. To unlock the game’s most powerful move, the super shot, hold the shoot button for 2 full seconds when your team’s blue energy bar (at the bottom of the screen) is fully charged. These shots are nearly impossible for goalies to save, so save them for when you are within 15 yards of the opposing goal to avoid wasting your charge. If you’re playing 2v2 co-op or competitive matches with friends, assign clear roles: have one player focus on defensive tackling and staying near your own goal, while the other stays forward to receive passes and take shots, rather than both players chasing the ball across the court. Another underused trick is the wall pass: bounce passes off the side walls of the court to get past tight defensive lines, as opposing AI players almost never anticipate these bounces. Avoid common mistakes like taking regular shots from more than 20 yards out, as these almost never go in and
