Ave Fenix (Electrogame, Spanish bootleg of Phoenix)

Ave Fenix, released by Spanish bootleg arcade publisher Electrogame in the early 1980s, is an unlicensed localized version of Amstar’s iconic 1980 fixed-screen shooter Phoenix. Named after the Spanish term for "Phoenix", this bootleg emerged during a period of widespread unlicensed arcade game distribution across Southern Europe, where small publishers like Electrogame adapted popular international arcade hits for local markets, often with minor adjustments to text, sound effects, and difficulty tuning to match regional player preferences. Unlike the official North American and European releases of Phoenix, Ave Fenix features Spanish-language on-screen prompts, slightly faster enemy movement speed, and a remixed background chiptune track that sets it apart from the original title. Gameplay follows the same core loop as the official Phoenix: players control a small spacecraft positioned at the bottom of the screen, tasked with clearing five waves of extraterrestrial enemies to progress.

Game Guide

Mastering Ave Fenix relies on a mix of quick reflexes, smart resource management, and knowledge of enemy patterns, even with its slightly higher difficulty compared to the official Phoenix release. First, familiarize yourself with the core controls: use the left/right joystick to move your ship horizontally across the bottom of the screen, the primary fire button to shoot projectiles upward, and the secondary shield button to activate a temporary protective barrier. Keep in mind that your shield only lasts for 3 full seconds, and has a 10-second cooldown period after use, so never waste it on minor, avoidable projectile strikes. For the first two waves of small alien fighters, prioritize targeting enemies that are mid-dive first, as they move far faster than enemies floating at the top of the screen and are far more likely to hit your ship with unplanned fire. Resist the urge to spam the fire button, as your ship has a fixed rate of fire; spamming will not increase your damage output, and will often lead to you missing fast-moving targets. During the third wave of phoenix eggs, focus your fire on eggs that are glowing or starting to crack first, as these will hatch into baby phoenixes in 2 to 3 seconds, and baby phoenixes deal contact damage if they collide with your ship. For the fourth wave of adult phoenixes, ignore their wings entirely: they regenerate within 2 seconds of being hit, so always aim for the small, glowing central core of each phoenix to take them out in one or two shots, rather than wasting ammo on regenerating body parts. When you reach the final mothership wave, first clear out the 4 escort fighters surrounding the mothership before you target the ship itself, as these escorts will fire continuous barrage of projectiles while you try to break through the mothership’s shield. Once the escorts are gone, aim for the small slit in the center of the mothership’s rotating shield; hitting this area will break the shield in 3 shots, and a single subseque
