Atomic Robo-kid (Japan, Type-2, set 2)

Released in 1988 by Japanese developer and publisher UPL Co., Ltd, Atomic Robo-kid (Japan, Type-2, set 2) is a rare regional variant of the beloved horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up arcade title. Set in a post-apocalyptic 21st century Earth devastated by a global nuclear war, the game casts players as the titular Atomic Robo-Kid, a compact, heavily armed android built to eliminate rogue military AI and its army of sentient war machines that have taken over the planet’s remaining habitable zones. This specific Type-2, set 2 Japanese release fixes prominent performance issues like frame rate slowdown during heavy enemy spawns that plagued the initial Japanese arcade launch, while also introducing a slightly elevated difficulty curve tailored for veteran arcade players, adjusted enemy spawn patterns, and exclusive hidden content not available in international releases. Across 6 core stages, players will navigate desolate city ruins, underground military facilities, volcanic wastelands, an

Game Guide

Mastering Atomic Robo-kid (Japan, Type-2, set 2) starts with learning its core control scheme: use the 8-way joystick to move your Robo-Kid across the screen, the first button to fire your equipped weapon, and the second button to cycle between collected weapon types. For the opening stage’s ruined city landscape, prioritize picking up the homing missile power-up first: it automatically targets swarms of small flying drones that spawn from the top and bottom screen edges, letting you focus on dodging incoming fire instead of precise aiming. When facing the first stage’s giant tank boss, first destroy its 3 top turrets to disable its high-damage cannon fire, then focus all attacks on the glowing weak point on its chest plate, while staying in the center of the screen to easily dodge rolling bomb attacks that sweep along the top and bottom edges. For the second stage’s dark underground facility, swap to the spread shot to reveal and destroy partially invisible floating mine traps hidden in shadowed sections. Save any shield power-ups you collect exclusively for boss fights: each shield absorbs up to 3 incoming hits, which is critical for surviving the third stage boss’s fast, sweeping laser attacks that are hard to dodge consistently. As this is the Japanese Type-2 set 2 variant, you keep your current weapon level when you lose a life (unlike international releases where you lose all upgrades on death), so don’t be afraid to take minor risks to collect extra power cores. To unlock the secret prototype miniboss, collect the 4 hidden cores: located at the top right corner of stage 1 right before the boss door, behind the stack of crates at the bottom left of stage 2, behind the cloud cover at the middle top of stage 3, and behind the reactor pipes at the bottom right of stage 5. Beating the prototype grants a permanent 2x damage boost that makes the final stage’s AI core boss fight significantly easier. Finally, use the charge cannon (hold the fire button for 2 seconds
