Atomic Robo-kid (Japan, Type-2, set 1)

First released in Japanese arcades in 1988 by developer and publisher UPL, Atomic Robo-kid (Japan, Type-2, set 1) is a beloved hybrid scrolling shooter that blends side-scrolling action, platforming elements, and fast-paced mech combat for a uniquely retro arcade experience. This specific Japan Type-2 set 1 variant is the unmodified original arcade ROM, preserving all cutscenes, original Japanese voice lines, and the intended difficulty curve that was adjusted for international releases. Set in the post-apocalyptic year of 2098, the game follows the titular Atomic Robo-kid, a 3-meter tall experimental combat robot built by surviving human scientists to retake Earth from the invading alien mech army known as the Demon Empire. Across six distinct, challenging stages, you’ll navigate through ruined cityscapes, underground military bases, and alien fortress corridors, fighting swarms of enemy drones, turrets, and mid-bosses before facing off against massive, screen-filling end-stage bosses

Game Guide

Mastering Atomic Robo-kid (Japan, Type-2, set 1) is all about balancing aggressive play and smart resource management, especially since this original Japanese version has a higher enemy spawn rate and tighter difficulty than its international counterparts. First, familiarize yourself with the core controls: use the 8-way joystick to move your Robo-kid anywhere on screen, the primary fire button to shoot your equipped weapon, and the secondary button to cycle between collected weapons. For the first two stages, prioritize collecting the Wide Laser power-up as soon as it drops: it fires three horizontal beams that cover most of the screen, making it perfect for clearing out swarms of small enemy drones and hidden turrets that line the stage walls. Save your Piercing Rocket ammo for mid-bosses and end-stage bosses, as it deals twice as much damage to armored targets as standard ammo. Always keep at least one Shield power-up in reserve starting from Stage 3: this stage features sudden ambushes from floating laser drones that spawn off-screen and fire fast, unavoidable barrages if you don’t have a shield to absorb the hit. When you reach the in-stage supply drops that appear halfway through every level, don’t rush to pick up all the power-ups immediately: 3 enemy drones will spawn behind you 2 seconds after the supply drop appears, so clear those first before collecting your rewards. For boss fights, take 10 seconds to observe their attack pattern before you start firing: every boss has a 3-step repeating attack cycle, and learning to dodge their moves first will save you from losing lives unnecessarily. For example, the Stage 4 Flying Fortress boss will flash bright red for 1 second before firing a full-screen laser sweep; fly to the very top or very bottom of the screen during this flash to avoid taking damage. Finally, don’t get distracted by score pickups if it means putting yourself in the line of fire: this version of the game has limited extra lives, so surviving
