Astrians (clone of Swarm) [Bootleg]

Astrians (clone of Swarm) [Bootleg] is an unlicensed 1982 arcade fixed shooter game, developed and distributed by unregistered bootleg game studios as a direct clone of Gremlin Industries’ hit 1982 arcade title Swarm. During the golden age of arcade gaming in the early 1980s, bootleg copies of popular titles were extremely common across global arcades, as small operators sought to avoid expensive official licensing fees while still offering the hottest gameplay experiences to their customers. Unlike many low-quality bootlegs of the era, Astrians retains nearly all core mechanics of the original Swarm, with only minor adjustments made to enemy movement speed, scoring multipliers, and visual sprite details to avoid immediate copyright claims. In Astrians, players take control of a small, maneuverable starfighter positioned at the bottom of a fixed black screen, facing off against waves of incoming alien fleets (dubbed “Astrians”) that move in synchronized, shifting formation across the u

Game Guide

Mastering Astrians (clone of Swarm) [Bootleg] relies on quick reflexes, smart positioning, and knowledge of the game’s unique bootleg-specific mechanics to hit high scores and clear all 12 waves of enemy attacks. First, familiarize yourself with the basic controls: use the horizontal joystick to move your starfighter left and right across the bottom of the screen, and press the single action button to fire laser projectiles upwards at incoming Astrian forces. For the first three waves, enemy movement is slow and predictable: prioritize targeting the smallest, front-row enemy units first, as they fire fast, low-damage projectiles that are easy to miss if you are focused on larger ships further back. When you see the enemy formation start to shrink and tighten, immediately move to either the far left or far right edge of the screen: this signals that a group of high-damage command ships is about to begin a dive bombing run, and the center of the screen is the highest-risk area for incoming fire. Take advantage of the bootleg version’s unique bonus system: after clearing every full wave of enemies, 3 floating golden power pods will drift across the screen for 8 seconds, and shooting each one grants you 1,200 bonus points, double the reward offered in the official Swarm release. Keep an eye out for rare red-glowing enemy units that appear randomly starting in wave 4: shooting one will grant you a temporary shield that absorbs one full enemy hit, a feature exclusive to this bootleg version. When only 2 or 3 enemy units remain in a wave, they will break formation and make unpredictable, zig-zagging dive runs: avoid the urge to fire continuously during this phase, and instead focus on dodging first, only firing when the enemy units slow down as they pull up from their dive at the bottom of the screen. If you can clear all 12 waves, you will unlock a hidden endless mode, where enemy difficulty scales infinitely for competitive high score runs.
