Asteroids (rev 2)

Asteroids (rev 2) is the updated 1979 arcade revision of Atari’s iconic space-themed shooter, one of the most commercially successful and culturally influential arcade titles of the golden age of arcade gaming. Built on the core framework of the original 1979 Asteroids release, this revision fine-tunes gameplay balance, fixes minor technical bugs from the initial launch, and adjusts scoring parameters to deliver a smoother, more competitive experience for arcade players of all skill levels. Published by Atari Inc., the game uses vector graphics to render its minimalist, monochrome space environment, a signature design choice that made it stand out on 1970s arcade floors alongside sprite-based competitors. The premise is straightforward: players control a small triangular spaceship trapped in an asteroid field, tasked with destroying drifting asteroids and occasional flying saucer enemies to earn points, while avoiding collisions with space debris, enemy fire, and the ship’s own momentu

Game Guide

Mastering Asteroids (rev 2) relies on understanding its unique movement physics and prioritizing high-value targets while managing your ship’s momentum to avoid unnecessary risk. First, familiarize yourself with the inertia system: never hold the thruster button for long periods unless you are intentionally moving across the screen to escape a dense asteroid cluster, as unregulated momentum will send your ship drifting into debris before you can react. Instead, use short, controlled bursts of thrust to adjust your position, and always keep track of where your ship is drifting even when you are not actively firing thrusters. Prioritize target order to maximize points and reduce screen clutter: large flying saucers are worth 200 points each, but they fire inaccurate, slow shots that are easy to avoid, while small flying saucers are worth 1,000 points each, fire much more accurate, fast projectiles, and should be destroyed immediately whenever they spawn to avoid unexpected hits. When destroying large asteroids, always shoot them from a distance, as each large asteroid breaks into 3 medium asteroids, which each break into 3 small asteroids, so firing too close will send a swarm of small debris directly at your ship. A common high-score strategy for Asteroids (rev 2) is the “screen wrap trick”: when you fly off one edge of the screen, you reappear on the opposite edge, which you can use to escape tight situations where you are surrounded by asteroids, but be careful never to wrap the screen when a flying saucer is active, as the saucer can shoot you the moment you reappear before you have time to adjust your position. Save your hyperspace ability for emergencies only: hyperspace sends your ship to a random position on the screen, but there is a 1 in 10 chance your ship will self-destruct when you activate it, or reappear directly on top of an asteroid or enemy projectile, so only use it when a collision is unavoidable. For long play sessions, focus on clearing all small
