Asterock (Sidam bootleg of Asteroids) [Bootleg]

Asterock is a 1980 arcade bootleg of Atari’s iconic 1979 space shooter Asteroids, developed and distributed unofficially by Italian arcade manufacturer Sidam. Designed for low-cost cabinet installation across European arcades, this bootleg retains nearly all of the original Asteroids’ beloved core gameplay while introducing small, fan-favorite tweaks including slightly faster asteroid spawn rates and adjusted UFO firing patterns that added extra challenge for seasoned players. Like the official Atari release, Asterock uses monochromatic vector graphics to render a floating asteroid field where players take control of a small, triangular delta-wing spacecraft. Your core objective is to survive as long as possible while racking up high scores by destroying drifting asteroids and hostile enemy UFOs that periodically enter the playfield. When hit, large asteroids split into two medium-sized rocks, which in turn split into two small, fast-moving fragments when shot, with higher point values

Game Guide

Mastering Asterock relies on learning the unique physics of its zero-gravity playfield and using strategic prioritization of targets to avoid being overwhelmed. First, familiarize yourself with the core controls: use the left and right cabinet buttons to rotate your triangular ship, the thrust button to accelerate forward, the fire button to launch single laser shots, and the hyperspace button to teleport to a random screen position. The first key rule to survive long runs is to avoid constant thrust. Since there is no friction in Asterock’s playfield, your ship will continue moving at its current speed and direction until you apply thrust in the opposite direction to slow down or change course. Overusing thrust will often send you drifting into unseen asteroids at the edge of the screen, so stick to short, controlled bursts of movement only when necessary to avoid hazards or line up a shot. When approaching a cluster of large asteroids, never fire wildly at multiple targets at once. Each large asteroid splits into two medium asteroids when hit, and each medium asteroid splits into two fast-moving small asteroids, so shooting multiple large rocks at once will create an unmanageable swarm of tiny, fast targets. Instead, pick one large asteroid at a time, and angle your shot so that the resulting split fragments drift away from your current position, not toward you. Prioritize enemy UFOs above all other targets, especially the small, fast variant. Large UFOs fire inaccurate, random shots and only award 200 points, but small UFOs fire highly accurate shots and give 1000 points, making them both the biggest threat and the highest score opportunity. If a small UFO spawns, drop everything to take it out immediately, even if you have to use a quick burst of thrust to get a clear line of sight. Use hyperspace only as a last resort. Roughly 12% of all hyperspace jumps will spawn you directly on top of an asteroid or incoming fire, leading to an instant lost life, so only use
