Assault (Rev B)

Released by legendary Japanese arcade developer Namco in 1988 as an updated revision of its original top-down tank shooter launched earlier the same year, Assault (Rev B) is widely regarded as the definitive version of one of the most underrated action arcade titles of the late 1980s golden age of arcades. The game puts players in control of a heavily armored futuristic hover-tank, tasked with fighting through 7 increasingly difficult combat zones filled with enemy ground tanks, stationary anti-armor turrets, aerial attack drones, and massive end-stage boss vehicles. Unlike the original 1988 Assault release, the Rev B build fixes critical collision detection bugs that caused unfair player deaths in earlier runs, adjusts enemy spawn rates to avoid overwhelming new players during the first three stages, and balances weapon damage values to make power-up rewards feel far more impactful without making the game too easy for core arcade fans. Game Guide

Mastering Assault (Rev B) starts with learning to leverage its most unique core mechanic: your tank’s short-range jump thruster, activated via the secondary action button. First, keep in mind that your tank is completely invulnerable to all incoming damage while mid-jump, so save this ability for escaping dense barrages of enemy fire, dodging incoming suicide drone rushes, or leaping over terrain obstacles like minefields and concrete barriers that block your movement. For basic combat, always prioritize taking out elevated stationary turrets first before engaging moving ground units: these turrets fire high-damage, fast-moving rounds that are easy to miss when you are focused on dodging smaller enemy tanks, and they are usually positioned at the edges of the map to catch you off guard during flanking moves. When collecting power-ups, always prioritize armor upgrades first, followed by triple-shot cannon upgrades, then homing missile pickups: armor upgrades give you an extra hit of health, which is critical for surviving the stage 4 and later difficulty spike where enemy rounds deal twice as much damage as early levels. For boss fights, every boss vehicle has a clearly visible weak point, usually on its rear or underside: for the first stage’s heavy mobile fortress boss, for example, circle around to its back while it fires its front-facing cannons, then jump to hit its exposed bottom power core three times to destroy it instantly. Finally, take advantage of Assault (Rev B)’s fixed enemy spawn positions: after one or two runs, you will learn exactly where new enemies appear on each map, so you can pre-position your tank to take them out immediately before they can surround you.
