Amigo [Bootleg]

Amigo [Bootleg] is an unlicensed arcade action game first circulated in 1983, based on the official 1982 Taiyo Systems title *Amigo*, a cult classic 2D platformer arcade title originally released exclusively in Japanese game centers. Unlike the official Japanese release, the bootleg version features adjusted difficulty curves, simplified sprite animations, and localized English text for Western audiences, making it far more accessible to casual arcade goers outside Japan when it hit global arcades in the mid-1980s. The game follows a cartoonish Mexican cowboy protagonist nicknamed Amigo, who must navigate 8 increasingly challenging side-scrolling levels to rescue his kidnapped burro from a gang of bandits that have taken over his small desert hometown. Each level throws unique obstacles at players, from cactus patches that drain health on contact, to rolling tumbleweeds, flying vultures, and patrolling bandit goons that shoot at Amigo from off-screen platforms. Game Guide

Mastering Amigo [Bootleg] starts with getting familiar with the core arcade controls: the 8-way joystick moves Amigo left, right, and lets him duck, while the two action buttons handle jumping and firing your six-shooter revolver. First, prioritize collecting the sombrero power-ups scattered across every level: these grant you 10 seconds of invincibility, letting you run straight through cacti, tumbleweeds, and even enemy bullets without taking damage. Save these power-ups for the end of each level, where you will face a mini-boss bandit that has twice the health of regular goons. Next, pay attention to the background cacti: red flowering cacti always hide extra life power-ups behind them, so jump to the platform directly above them to reveal the hidden collectible before proceeding. When dealing with flying vultures, wait until they are directly in line with your gun before firing, as your bullets travel in a straight horizontal line and will not arc to hit targets above or below you. For the rolling tumbleweeds that spawn every 10 seconds in desert levels, time your jump to land directly on top of them instead of dodging: you will earn 500 bonus points for each tumbleweed you jump on, and these points add up to unlock extra lives every 10,000 points you score. On level 5, the first canyon level, avoid standing on the wooden platforms for more than 2 seconds: they will crumble after a short delay, dropping you into the canyon below for an instant game over. The final boss on level 8, the bandit leader, has three attack patterns: three consecutive shots, an arcing dynamite throw, then a 3-second reload behind a crate. Wait for the dynamite to explode, then jump over the blast and fire three shots at his head to deal damage; 8 total hits will defeat him to beat the game.
