Amidar (Scramble hardware)

First released in 1981 by Japanese gaming giant Konami, Amidar (Scramble hardware) is a beloved fixed-screen maze arcade title that built on the success of the original Amidar with optimized performance tailored for Konami’s widely used Scramble arcade hardware. Unlike the standard Amidar rom, this Scramble hardware variant features crisper 8-bit graphics, richer layered sound effects, and more consistent frame rates, making it the preferred version for arcade enthusiasts in the early 1980s. The game’s core loop alternates between two distinct level themes: in jungle stages, you control a small monkey traversing a grid-based maze to collect all scattered coconuts while avoiding patrolling native warriors and a fast, aggressive tracker that chases your every move. In paint stages, you take the role of a painter tasked with tracing the edges of every grid block to fill the entire screen with color, with enemies swapped out for supernatural monsters that hunt you across the maze. Game Guide

Mastering Amidar (Scramble hardware) relies on learning enemy patterns and leveraging the game’s core mechanics to your advantage, rather than fast reflexes alone. First, familiarize yourself with the core controls: you only need a 4-way joystick to navigate the grid, with no attack buttons to worry about. The two alternating level types require slightly different strategies: for jungle coconut collection stages, prioritize picking up coconuts in less crowded sections of the maze first, to reduce the number of paths you need to re-traverse later. For paint stages, always aim to close off large grid sections first rather than filling small, scattered blocks: this cuts down the total distance you need to travel, and reduces the chance of being trapped between multiple enemies. Pay close attention to enemy behavior: regular enemies follow fixed, predictable patrol paths along grid edges, and can easily be avoided by adjusting your route by one block. Only the dedicated tracker enemy will change its path to follow you, so keep it on your radar at all times. The four corner blocks of every maze are your most valuable resource: stepping on one will activate a short invincibility window, during which you can run into enemies to eliminate them for bonus points. If you find yourself cornered by the tracker, always head for the nearest corner first to turn the tables. For extra high scores, try to lure one or more regular enemies into an unfilled grid section before you close its final edge: sealing an enemy inside a completed section will award you a massive point bonus, far higher than eliminating them with a corner power-up. The Scramble hardware version’s enhanced audio is also a useful tool: the tracker’s movement sound effect increases in volume as it gets closer to your position, so you can even react to its position if it is off-screen. Finally, remember that remaining level time is converted to bonus points when you clear a stage, so try to move efficiently rather th
